I've got quite a few of these tomatoes in my harvest. They look like they've been rubber banded. Is it a weird genetic thing or something else?

I’d market them as balloon animal tomatoes

If the flower petals don’t fall off properly it can cause a ring to form and the lower part gets stunted, but this is really extreme so I’m not sure that’s the cause.

Last time I did San Marzanos almost all of them looked like this. No idea why. The skins still came off fine and they tasted great so 🤷♀️

Everyones San Marzanos have blossom end rot. You have blossom end ball!
Seems weird, but harmless.

Not to sound like a broken record…but inconsistent watering and a slight calcium deficiency is normally the cause for misshapen tomatoes. Not enough of a calcium deficiency to cause blossom end rot but enough to interrupt the growth during the fruiting phase. Nutrient deficiencies are most often caused by inconsistent watering…not lack of fertilizing.
The other most often reported cause is soil and temperature fluctuations during the fruiting phase. Overly hot or cool days, including swings of being hot one day and cooler the next during fruit growth as well as inconsistent sunlight exposure can cause that pear-ing effect.
But San Marzanos do have some genetic variations, including San Marzano Scatalone, that DO have a similar shape to your photos. It is possible that the shape is exactly what it is supposed to be.

This happened to my yellow pears a lot this year. It’s the petals drying in a constrictive ring.
