I can’t speak to what exactly was in Bourdain’s heart, but I have battled severe depression my whole adult life. I have even been very close to suicide in the past (I’m doing alright now). Even at my worst I had so much love in my heart for those around me, I just didn’t have any for myself.

I’ve met both Tony and Paula.
I met Tony when he gave a talk at a local culinary school I was going to for pastry classes, I was in my very early days, in my early 20s, trying to take classes, work and take care of my dad who had just started long term palliative care for silicosis. I was so burned out and just, dead on my feet.
There was a food faire kinda thing going on near there, and we ended up sharing a table outside a Vietnamese food truck out of pure luck. I didn’t get to attend the talk cause I was working, but I got off just in time to get some food. We talked very casually, he asked me a lot of questions about what I was doing. He encouraged me, genuinely one of my favorite moments. He was straight up really nice. He definitely had his demons, but, that tiny bit of encouragement genuinely helped me.
I met Paula at a function I was working in Nashville after I’d stopped being a chef and had transitioned to bartender. I was manning the floor and taking drinks to folks. She was incredibly rude to staff in general, wouldn’t even look at you if you were waiting on her.
How you treat “the help” is all I need to generally know about a person, so she can go fuck herself on top of all the other nasty shit I know about her.
