Its like this at my local food lion as well. Can’t tell you why but thats why I bought it at food lion instead of anywhere else, selling it for almost $11.

Walmart isn’t always the cheapest.
$3.19/lb for boneless skinless chicken is about right in Central NC and can even be as low as $1.99/lb on sale.
Please shop around and don’t assume that Walmart will be the best deal.

It’s right after a holiday. Grocery stores mark down meat sooner and more of it, when it’s left over from a holiday, when they have a lot. Years ago I got $200 worth of ribs for $100, after either Easter or Memorial Day!😁

In my area at least Walmart is the most expensive for groceries. Most people I know do Aldis or Kroger with coupons. We don’t have a food lion near me but every time we travel to neighboring Tennessee we go to the one near our cabin and it’s always a few dollars cheaper than the local Walmart as well. They most likely have a nice contract/relationship with their suppliers that goes way back.

What’s so special? $2.99/lb is the standard price of chicken breast near me. When it’s on sale, it’s BOGO so $1.49/lb.

That’s just the sale price. As others said loss leader But find out what day they get a meat shipment and go shopping the morning before… my local food lion generally has a ton of meat reduced for quick sale on Sunday mornings for example, but you gotta get there pretty early. I very rarely purchase meat at the normal retail price any more. I’ll buy a week or so worth on Sunday morning, then freeze what I won’t be cooking in the next couple days.

$5.99lb gets you organic at Costco. They’re making you believe it’s a deal at $3.19 but that’s just close to regular market price. You feel better when you think it’s a sale and tend to buy more since you “saved”.

I’m in Phoenix and many stores sell skinless boneless chicken breast on weekly sales for $2.99 a pound. i prefer it with the bone and skin but it’s hard to find it. I render the skin for fat and make chips out of it. the sternums are full of collagen that I cook and blend up for broths.

Either loss leader to get people in the door or the buyer was able to secure better pricing (cost-wise) & they’re passing the savings on to the consumer. We do similar except if the supplier gives us 20% off invoice, we only give 10-15% to the consumer.
