I picked up this can of Globe Corned Mutton from an Asian grocery store a few years ago, and finally getting around to trying it a week before its Best By date. I bought it while seeking fish, so you get the review whether it fits or not!

As you can see from the pics, it's halal and comes with juices. At least that's what the label says, but it didn't seem juicy until heated. Certainly not dry, but it's more fatty than juicy, and didn't have juices to drain like canned fish.

It was tender, but not just ground mush. You can see and bite into muscle fibers and chunks, that give way easily. Flavor was good. It had a light taste of lamb and that je ne sais quoi all canned meats have. It's not gamey at all, less than general lamb even, and I'm a lamb lover. It's not overly corned flavored either, more subtle compared to corned beef.

If it weren't for eating the whole can, I wouldn't have said it was salty either. I ate the first half cold, right out of the can. It's not until I heated the rest that the saltiness of the 6 servings started coming through. And I think that's partly from the efficient delivery with the rich, greasy, melted fat.

I actually liked it better cold. More firm and meaty, less soft and greasy. But that was also the first half, so salt overkill hadn't hit yet. I just heated it in a pot, and didn't leave it to crisp as it was too "juicy" to bother. At least while impatient and not making hash.

Overall, I liked it, it's a winner. Add some rosemary, Indian spices, or anything that goes well with lamb if you want to spice it up.

7.5/10. I would gladly bring it into a bunker with the intention of getting very sick of it during an apocalypse.

This is fun! I love seeing new and interesting tins. Fish or not.

I don’t know how I feel about the literal photo on the can of what might be the actual sheep that you’re eating. Like the designer of the can was like “And we can put the guy right there like ‘see this guy? Yeah, you’re eatin’ him!”

  3. Not canned fish therefore not appropriate for this sub, BUT in 2024 I picked up a tin of this Globe Corned mutton because it was near the very expansive fish section at the SF Asian Supermarket in Garland

I made a Jamaican curry with it from a recipe I found on YouTube

I’ve had this before! I didn’t do anything fancy, just chopped up some potato and threw it in to make a hash, and it was very very good.

I bought a similar can today, but beef! It’s got a cow on the can and everything.

Ah, as a one-off, I don’t mind the review. I get the “look what I ran into while searching for tinned fish” ethos lol.

I’m a goat/lamb fan, and wondered what the canned mutton was like.

Shrimps is bugs. Sheeps is fish.

    I’d eat this though!

Sheep evolved from fish… so we’re good

Hi, big corned beef and big lamb fan here, also Australian. Where did you buy this? Interested.

I didn’t know corned mutton was a thing, so I appreciate the review from the “look what I found” perspective. Thanks!
