New Applesauce Cake (Betty Crocker’s Picture Cook Book 1950)

    NEW APPLESAUCE CAKE

    First, make thick unsweetened applesauce (below). Then prepare oblong or square pan. Use method as given in recipe above. Add applesauce in last 2 min. of beating. Use:

    For 13×9″ Oblong

    2 3/4 cups sifted SOFTASILK

    or 2 1/2 cups sifted GOLD MEDAL Flour

    2 cups sugar

    1/4 tsp. baking powder

    1 1/2 tsp. soda

    1 1/2 tsp. salt

    3/4 tsp. cinnamon

    1/2 tsp. cloves

    1/2 tsp. allspice

    1/2 cup soft shortening

    1/2 cup water

    1/2 cup walnuts, cut-up

    1 cup raisins, cut-up

    1 1/2 cups applesauce

    1 very large egg (1/3 cup)

    9″ square

    1 3/4 cups sifted SOFTASILK

    or 1 2/3 cups sifted GOLD MEDAL Flour

    1 1/3 cups sugar

    1/4 tsp. (scant) baking powder

    1 tsp. soda

    1 tsp. salt

    1/2 tsp. cinnamon

    1/3 tsp. cloves

    1/3 tsp. allspice

    1/3 cup soft shortening

    1/3 cup water

    1/3 cup walnuts, cut-up

    2/3 cup raisins, cut-up

    1 cup applesauce

    1 egg (1/4 cup)

    TEMPERATURE: 350 (mod. oven)

    TIME: Bake oblong cake 45 to 50 min.,

    square cake 35 to 40 min.

    All you have to do

    To make 1 1/2 cups applesauce: wash, quarter, and core 6 to 8 tart apples. Add 1/4 cup water. Cover and cook to a mush, stirring occasionally. Press through a sieve or food mill.
