Came across this at the hardware store today. Sounds like a pretty good deal, but also sounds like these are routinely on sale and have some mixed reviews. I understand they are made by the same company that makes Pit Boss. Anyone have any thoughts? Alternatives in that price range that would be better? Thank you!

  1. Size/features/quality is hard to beat at that price.

Just be aware that the apps are garbage and you can only operate them with Bluetooth, so you gotta be in range. the WiFi capability has been broken for months (on iOS at least). So control the grill with its physical buttons, don’t bother with the apps tbh.

Otherwise parts are easily replaced and availability is good. They have been using the same shell for years and years. Only the PID board has been updated recently.

I’ve been using a SL1000 for 5 years (upgraded the PID myself) and it’s still in very good condition. I got it for 500$ CAD back then, and would buy again at that price.

Yeah great deal, like other said the wifi sucks but who cares. Solid construction.

For what it’s worth, I joined a Louisiana Grills group on FB when I was thinking about buying one and never did buy one. Sounded like a lot of hopper fires, paint issues, and other stuff.

I have NO direct experience with them and am only sharing what I came across in reviewing. I don’t remember specific models, but there were certainly some Black Labels involved. This would have been a couple of years ago, it’s also possible they fixed those issues.

Personally having bought a cheaper grill as my first smoker… I learned my lesson. I .wouldn’t do it

I bought one from this brand not this model on clearance at Costco about 3 years ago. It was constantly clogging with the pellets around the screw and fire was going out. Trying to relight it was a pain. Had a big fire in it once, barely managed to save the food. Then I won a Traeger in a raffle at work and got rid of this thing. I run the same pellets on the Traeger and left it running overnight without any issues, never had a clog or a fire.

Unless they made some major improvements I wouldn’t recommend it.

Mine stopped working right at 100 days. Just outside warranty period. I thought it was great deal also….turns out…not so much. I do not recommend.
