I made a wedding cake for my best friend and his wife! It’s my 2nd tiered cake (I made my own wedding cake a few years ago, which was my first because who has time to practice???) and the 2nd time I’ve worked with fondant and my first time working with gum paste.

I made every mushroom (and tried to make them anatomically accurate) and every detail of the “fairy garden” all by hand. I learned how to paint the fondant/gum paste. Only the flowers, the eucalyptus, moss and fiddleheads are non-edible because I don’t have infinite time since I had a baby 16 weeks ago.

The bride had sent me some inspo pictures and gave me creative freedom. They have lots of mushroom decor at home and recently put a fairy garden in their front flower bed, and the wedding was whimsical forest/forest fairy wedding. The bride had seen some of the process for making the mushrooms and she knew I was going to try to make the bark (from an inspo pic) but she did not know I put the little fairy house in the back. It was a surprise and she loved it!

I’m incredibly proud of this. The only thing is I wish I had made the bottom tier 12” instead of 10”.

The flavors are
– top tier is an almond flavored butter cake with a pistachio creme mousseline filling and rose SMBC
– bottom tier is an earl grey cake with a blackberry lavender tea creme mousseline and lavender SMBC
