Parents came into town for the week. I try to make it a reason to open something special for them every time they are here since I only get to see them once or twice a year.
They’re not too big on wine but when they do drink, my dad prefers Bordeaux. He finds Bordeaux to be more ‘straightforward’ and it generally takes a lot from a Burgundy to impress him. Yet tonight, I poured him a glass of this and upon sniffing and tasting, I was met with his nod of approval. We drank the bottle over 2-3 hours after an early dinner. No food pairing, just a good bottle paired with fun with the family and great conversations.
As for notes, I would simply describe the wine as ripe and haunting. The nose had ripe cherries, a touch of smoke, damp leaves and a hint of iron. However, the palate was where I found it incomparable to any other pinot on earth. There was just so much power, density and clarity in its notes of red cherries, currants, raspberries at this age without any compromise to secondary and tertiary notes of forest floor, pronounced spices and a hint of limestone. The finish was extremely lengthy; think cloves and leather-coated ripe cherries.

I know everyone loses their minds over DRC and that’s all fine, but I’d need new pants if I got the opportunity to drink this. Kudos for drinking it with your parents. That’s an incredible bottle to share with the people you love.
