LITTLE ITALY, Manhattan (WABC) — The Feast of San Gennaro is underway, and there was great weather for the first weekend.
The annual feast is expected to bring thousands to Mulberry Street to celebrate Italian food, culture and music. The festivities start at the intersection of Canal and Mulberry Streets and runs deep into the heart of Little Italy.
Squeezed onto Mulberry Street like ricotta inside a cannoli, thousands of wide-eyed revelers were faced with a tough decision — what do you eat first?
“When you come to the San Gennaro Feast, everybody is Italian!” said Chef Francesco Giuseppe.
There was pizza coming out fresh from Giuseppe’s oven.
It is a first for some — Victoria is originally from Colombia.
“Pasta was the best one that I got in my life! So good,” she said.
She is talking about the Cacio e Pepe. Executive Chef Mike Dileo is cooking with Parmesan Reggiano — bringing the flavor to San Gennaro.
“99 years of tradition, Italian food, so many people every day. It’s just a great time,” Dileo said.
There is no better representation of Italian-American culture than the Feast of San Gennaro, but we’d be remiss if we did not have a review from Italians who moved to New York City from Italy.
“I like New York City. There is not really in Europe, except for London which is similar, but New York is much better. There’s not really such a big city. And you can find everything you want here,” said Mauricio.
