I’ve been hearing a ton of great things about this place recently and I’ve personally been wanting to try this place for maybe 3 or 4 years now? So my expectations coming in were sky high, and I was honestly worried it would not even get close to hitting them. It’s in a pretty nice area and I’d recommend exploring if you have time, but we were on a bit of a time crunch.

Service was pretty much flawless – super professional, hit all the details, but also still felt pretty warm and hospitable. I liked talking with each of the different servers and I didn’t feel like any of the conversation was awkward or forced at all. Ambiance was also great – we were sat in a corner booth, so the table itself was pretty large AND the seats were super comfortable. At the end of the meal, we actually go to sit in the rooftop and enjoy the sunset and open firepit. Super cozy vibes.

The pacing of the meal was pretty horrendous though. Some dishes were served within 10 minutes of each other, while other dishes were served over 30 minutes apart. I'm not sure if this was intentional so that we would sit in the rooftop around sunset time, but even after that it took almost an hour between our two dessert courses! That’s probably my biggest complaint of the night.

Food:

  • Late Summer in Sonoma (9.5/10) – is absolutely ridiculous to see in person, in a good way. They arrange around 10-12 small bites onto this crazy display and it’s already set up by the time you get seated, so you’re just greeted with this beautiful presentation of food. My favorite bites were the black tofu, squid sushi roll, squash blossom tempura, and the hamachi(?) with yellow sauce.
  • Cucumber Moriawase (8.5/10) – was a nice follow up, the sauce added a nice acidic kick to the really fresh fish, and lots of crunch from the veggies and flowers. The bluefin tuna was super soft and melt in your mouth.
  • Santa Barbara Cioppino (9/10) – super fun and tasty dish to eat. You get this really deep and rich broth with lots of fresh seafood in it. You break apart the garlic bread to dip into it, and then eat both together. What’s not to like? The santa barbara uni was also super clean and sweet, and I loved how they added a little char to it.
  • Gravenstein Apple (7/10) – I liked the duck liver and the sweetness of the apple together, but I feel like it needed something to bind the whole dish together. The lettuce had a nice crunch to it but it didn't have enough substance to rein in the richness/meatiness of the duck liver.
  • Misozuke Sawara (4/10) – Fish was cooked beautifully but I don’t like bittermelon at all and as soon as I bit into it, I wanted to spit it out immediately. Maybe it’s just a personal thing, but I could not eat the rest of the bittermelon and I basically just ate around it. Ruined the dish for me.
  • Sungold Tomato (6/10) – I’m usually a big tomato fan but this was a bit too much for me. They did do a lot of different textures, but the flavor profile was mostly just tomato in a cold setting. I didn't really like how they added a jelly-ish texture, so I struggled to put down the last couple bites.
  • Duck (8/10) / A5 Wagyu (8.5/10) – Both had essentially the same sauce and garnishes with just a different type of meat. The duck was super tender and paired perfectly with the tomatoes on the side. Wagyu was good on just on its own – not really much else to say.
  • Caramelized Mugi Shime (8/10) – Super fatty and rich with warm rice and some wagyu slices. I thought it was good and hearty, and a good ending to the meal but there was not a ton of complexity to this dish. I wish the carrots were a bit more acidic to cut into the fattiness of the rice.
  • Farm Grape (7.5/10) – Three parts to this dessert.
    • Green ice cream: The ice cream part had good grape flavor, but the ice was a bit too sour for my liking.
    • Mochi balls: The green mochi had a red bean(?) filling and was good. The strawberry ice cream was good, but nothing special. The yellow ball was some kind of butter mochi (?) and had a nice nuttiness(?) flavor to it
    • Butter mochi: It tasted good, but I didn't really appreciate the mixture of flavors in it that much
  • Wagashi (8/10) – Also a visually stunning dessert. Just solid small bites, overall very good but none of the bites stood out a lot to me. Overall I thought some of their dessert bites could have been a bit more sweet, they used a lot of sour + tart flavors.
