Used my table top Pitt boss for the first time this evening.

I reverse seared some strip steaks, they turned out pretty good except I over salted them.

It looked like when I opened my sear plate to finish the steaks some of the pellets in the end of the auger were also burning. Is that a normal or is that an issue?

Also what pellets does everyone like to use?

My recteq bullseye does it some. I’ve never had it burn back to the pellet box YET. Pellets , I use lumberjack . I tried the competition blend it’s was really good and this last bag I did the pecan. I got quite a bit more smoke from the pecan and good flavor. I haven’t gotten to try bear mountain yet. I may not. Having pretty good luck with the lumberjack pellets as of now. Pretty dang neat lil rig you have there. I like that.

Pit Boss pellets are fantastic and cheap at Walmart and Lowe’s.

I have had that model a year. We bought it because it fits in the storage compartment of our RV. I use it at home too. It works so well I can’t bring myself to buy a bigger one, it’s just the wife and I. It does the same thing you described. I do vacuum it out before every use because the small cooking area accumulates ash dust pretty heavy. Happy Smoking!

I have 3 different PitBoss units. They all burn at the auger tip. It will self extinguish once the blower turns off.

I have used several different brands of pellets and all have preformed fine.

I have this same grill and I’ve stuck with Pit Boss pellets – mostly because they’re readily available locally and at a decent price. I haven’t noticed the pellets in the end of the auger smoking, but I don’t look down there real often. Mostly I’m smoking with the shield in place, so it isn’t easy to see. I do clean out the ash cup every burn or two and I haven’t noticed burned pellets in the auger when it is cold. Also, make sure you’re following the instructions when you shut it down. I think part of what the fan is doing is making sure it doesn’t smolder up the auger overnight.
