As a lover of French wine, first and foremost, followed by Italian (and American at a push), he was dubious about the quality of wine available in the Cyclades, and understandably so. Retsina, a notorious Greek wine infused with the resin of pine trees, has long been likened to turpentine (!) thanks to its unmistakable bitterness. It was typically served to tourists in the ‘60s and ‘70s, single-handedly wrecking the reputation of Greek wine before it had even been established, despite the fact that wine has been made there since around 2,000 BC.
