Anyone know what this fish is? From Sushi Dai in Tokyo, described as a “deep sea fish” but they only had the Japanese name

What was the Japanese name? Initial thought was maybe Tai aka Pacific Seabream with the skin on, but I somehow think that may be wrong but that may be because I’ve never seen it served that way. It’d be easier to narrow it down if I knew the Japanese name for it.

Definitely some type of sea bream sushi.

[Japanese name is Sumikuiuo](https://www.instagram.com/p/DLEe4zNTGyB/). It’s not really frequently seen at sushi restaurants but seems to show up somewhat regularly at Sushi Dai.

I have never seen an English name for it. Scientific name is [*Synagrops japonicus*](https://www.zukan-bouz.com/syu/%E3%82%B9%E3%83%9F%E3%82%AF%E3%82%A4%E3%82%A6%E3%82%AA)*.* They are indeed deep sea fishes.

Edit: Found a few English names: [Blackmouth Splitfin](https://www.fishbase.se/summary/Synagrops-japonicus), [Japanese Sharptooth Bass](https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/451903-Synagrops-japonicus), [Glowbelly Seabass](https://fishesofaustralia.net.au/home/species/3236)
