Phillip Morris International’s U.S. businesses announced the donation Wednesday at a time when more than 516,000 people in Connecticut are food insecure.

WALLINGFORD, Conn. — Connecticut Foodshare is receiving a sizable donation from Philip Morris International’s U.S. businesses to help fight food insecurity across the state.

PMI U.S. announced the $100,000 donation on Wednesday. It was made in recognition of Hunger Action Month.

Connecticut Foodshare, a nonprofit organization dedicated to curbing hunger locally, will use the money to provide approximately 200,000 meals to residents who are food insecure.

According to Connecticut Foodshare, more than 516,000 people – or one in seven residents – are food insecure in the state. This includes one in six children.

The nonprofit has been pursuing its mission to combat hunger since its inception in 1982. Over the decades, it has distributed healthy food through more than 480 food banks, community kitchens and shelters, as well as over 100 mobile food pantry locations.

For PMI U.S., it was important to give back to an organization that provides hope and nourishment to thousands of families. PMI U.S. CEO Stacey Kennedy emphasized the significance of recognizing Connecticut Foodshare’s efforts, especially during Hunger Action Month.

“This is an example of our pragmatic philanthropy in action: The more we listen, the more we understand how to contribute effectively as active participants supporting collective progress in this community,” Kennedy said.

Over the past two years, PMI U.S. has also committed more than $2.5 million in philanthropic giving in Connecticut.

The business has supported AdvanceCT, the Connecticut Veterans Law Clinic, Dress for Success, Orchestra LUMOS, the Women’s Business Development Council and Career Resources, Inc.

The team at Connecticut Foodshare expressed excitement to join that group after learning about the sizable donation. Jason Jakubowski, president and CEO of the nonprofit, considered the gesture from PMI U.S. to be “generous.”

“This contribution will enable us to expand our reach and provide more meals for those in need,” Jakubowski said. “With the rising cost of living and the ongoing challenges many people face, the demand for food assistance is significant, and this donation will have a positive impact on the lives of individuals and families who rely on our services.”
