I visited an international market recently to scope out what tinned fish and canned sardines were available. A couple things I found interesting.

  • Found eels, haven’t tried tinned yet, but unagi sushi is great. Old fisherman fermented black bean?

  • Kweichow anchovies in oil. Slotted spoonful as a pizza topping?

Appreciate any recommendations.

In photo 12, that S&B crunchy garlic chili oil is really good! Ive tried a few and it’s my favorite. I’ve finished multiples jars just eating it on white rice.

That’s the only thing I recognize here unfortunately, but the taller 999 cans of sardines in pic 1 look interesting, I’ve never seen them packed in those kind of cans.

There’s Miso Sardines in pic 12! The yellow cans. And soy right next to them!

Old Fisherman canned eel is very different from the eel used for unagi sushi. It’s a lot more chewy and it benefits from adding it to hot rice and leaving it covered up for a while to warm up.

The instant dashi is worth picking up if you like Japanese food and they sell Japanese noodles. It makes a good easy fish broth, and that plus noodles and canned fish is a classic quick meal. Add an egg and some pickles or other veg and it’s even better.

First off, being an asian myself the level organization here is crazy and not typical of the stores I visit and it makes my brain very happy.

Secondly, theres some pretty good stuff here. I can vouch for the old fisherman black bean eel. Its a drier version compared to unagi thats almost dried/fried that will compliment plain white rice fantastically. I found the flavor and texture to be too intense to eat by itself. In the same vein, the bottom shelf can of fried dace with black beans is a wonderful salt bomb that goes amazing with rice.

The japanese sardine cans for miso and sweet soy are also great tasting but I have a personal aversion to pilchards. (Also go good with rice, see the theme here?)

Also if you have never tried it, grab yourself a jar of the chili crisp with the old lady on it. Lao Gan Ma will never do you wrong.

  6. Dude that entire bottom row of yellow tins. Fried dace with black beans served with rice is so good. It’s popular enough to warrant its entire shelf.
