The Pinotage Association, in partnership with Absa, has announced the results of the 2025 Absa Vintage Pinotage Award of Excellence. This annual competition recognises wines aged ten years and older, offering a rare platform for mature vintages to be evaluated and celebrated.
Excellence Recognised Across 16 Producers
This year, more than 37 wines were submitted. Of these, 27 wines from 16 producers achieved scores of 90 points and higher, earning the coveted Excellence Award. The judging panel consisted of Cape Wine Masters Bennie Howard, Anton Swart, Christine Rudman, Sandy Harper and Colin Frith, who assessed the entries in a rigorous blind tasting.
Beyers Truter, Chairman of the Pinotage Association, reflected on the results: “These awards highlight the enduring quality and character of South African wines. To see so many wines achieving such high recognition after more than a decade in bottle is a testament to both the grape and the people behind it.”

The Absa Vintage Pinotage Award of Excellence continue to shine a light on the depth and longevity of South Africa’s wine heritage, reinforcing the value of preserving and recognising older vintages. Again, highlighting one of Pinotages most admired qualities: its ability to mature gracefully.
Celebrating Pinotage at 100
This October, South Africa is celebrating a century of its beloved homegrown grape with a month-long, country-wide festival of Pinotage. The story began in 1925, when Professor Abraham Izak Perold of Stellenbosch University boldly crossed Pinot Noir with Cinsaut (then called Hermitage), creating a varietal that has since become a national treasure.
A hundred years later, the celebrations are as diverse as the grape itself. From October 9–12, Meerendal Wine Estate will host Pinotage 100: A Celebration of Legacy and the Future, featuring tastings, masterclasses and thought-leadership sessions. On October 11, International Pinotage Day will see wine lovers across the globe raising a glass, while Diemersfontein’s lively Pinotage on Tap festival offers a uniquely South African toast. On October 18, the Neethlingshof Pinotage Run combines fitness with festivity, with tastings along a scenic 6 km route. Meanwhile, L’Avenir Wine Estate will host an exclusive Pinotage Masterclass on October 10, celebrating both the grape’s classic elegance and its bold modern expressions.
Together, these celebrations honour a century of innovation, resilience and joy in the glass — and point to an inspiring future for Pinotage.
