Hi! I am just starting out decorating. I have a cookie recipe and icing recipe that I really like and I have found that I prefer to use tips instead of just the bag.

I will be making cookies for my son’s birthday in October and am curious how far in advance I can make them? How do I store them once baked?

Sometimes my line breaks or starts twirling around while trying to outline. Why does that happen?

Any other tricks and tips?!

Thank you!!

To fix the twirling, you may need to adjust the icing consistency or use a slightly bigger tip. As far as making and decorating, I make my cookies the week of the event. I bake on the first day and store the cookies in an airtight container. Second day, I pipe, flood and detail, allowing dry time before detail. Allow drying overnight. Third day, I package each cookie in heat and seal bags. I will then very carefully stack them. One layer, then add parchment paper and then another layer. I don’t like to stack more than two layers so I don’t ruin any details on the cookies. This will work even if you don’t plan to heat and use individual heat and seal bags. You can always bake cookies ahead of time and freeze them in a container or ziplock bags. When you take them out to decorate, open the container leaving the cookie inside and let them thaw for at least a couple of hours. Some people will freeze decorated cookies, but I haven’t taken that chance yet lol. Makes me nervous that the icing will bleed if condensation gets in there. All of this will absolutely depend upon how many cookies you have to make. Good luck. Hope this helps. ☺️
