A pub has defended the cost of Christmas dinner this year following backlash from some punters.

Festive food at The Fox at Shipley in Wolverhampton will set you back £100 for an adult and £50 for a child, which one person described as an ‘absolute rip off’.

In defence of the prices, a spokesperson for the pub said that food prices have ‘increased dramatically’ and that staff are paid double time on December 25.

This means that diners are charged the higher cost if they wish to enjoy Christmas day at the pub.

A post shared on the pub’s Facebook page 25 said: “Hi all. I am getting daily emails regarding Christmas Day so here is a little info.

“This year the cost is £100 adults and £50 children under 12 (babies in high chairs free)

“Maximum table number will be 12 and all subject to availability. I always contact last years diners first to see if they wish to join us again as many do.

“I will then post our menu and begin to take bookings. This will be the beginning of September approximately. Hope this info helps.”

One person shared the post and added: “£100 per adult & £50 per child. Absolute rip off!”

Someone then commented: “What the holy cow.”

The person then replied: “Bad ain’t it, just for meat and a bit of veg.”

Another said: “That is just ridiculous. Who [in] their right mind would pay that! I definitely wouldn’t.”

They went on to joke: “I’d want everything gold encrusted.”

In a follow up comment on the original post, a spokesperson for the pub said: “The price for Christmas is a fair price.

“Wage increases this year [are] up and we pay our staff double time on Christmas Day.

“Plus they are away from their family members and friends working hard to serve our customers.

“Gas and electric have doubled and food prices have increased dramatically so when all the sums were done, this is the cost for Christmas Day. Thank you.”
