Fascinating! Is this a common technique with this style of grill or is he just putting his own *ahem* SPIN on it

  2. I live in Europe and have never seen anything like this. This is cool.

For the life of me I don’t understand why this type of grill isn’t more popular, especially for camping. You can adjust the height of the grill to anywhere you want, unlike grills that have a discrete number of slots. The swinging and rotating sort of works like a rotisserie, allowing you to compensate for hot spots in your fire by moving the ingredients around, and the whole thing collapses into a set of poles, a chain, and the grate.

Absolute genius. Utilizing an under-sized fire to grill that large swinging grate.

In Saarland, there are three Schwenks involved: The Schwenk (the cook), the Schwenk (the grill) and the Schwenk (the pork on the grill). Everything is called Schwenk.

honestly…this just seems like a good way to get some stuff undercooked and other things overcooked.

You will find these at any German weihnachtsmarkt with a nice selection of sausages, pork and frikandelle.

If I did this, it would be a waiting game to see what part of the chain infrastructure breaks and dumps the food for 10 of my guests into the coals after X many cooks. I’d also be lightheaded from constantly saying, Wheeeee! under my breath.

What keeps it rotating or spinning?
