The Place Located at Gemmill Lane, La Vache! is the latest kid on the block located on one of the most hidden dining lanes in Singapore, Gemmill Lane. The name La Vache! is the French expression for ‘Holy Cow!’, where the theme of the French restaurant honours the enduring legacy of L’Entrecôte which is an integral part of classic French dining.

The sleek interior of La Vache! is Inspired by the vibrant energy of traditional bistros in Paris. Indeed, it does feel like I was transported out of Singapore the moment I entered the space.

It is a vibrant dining space with a bar counter for some pre-dinner drinks or casual steak-frites, as well as the 46-seat dining main room. Expect the likes of red-leather banquettes, oak panelling and checkered tablecloth to add to the Parisian bistro vibe.

The Food A very straightforward and brainless menu where the restaurant offers a standard set menu at S$68++ per person which essentially gets you salad, steak, and unlimited fries. Once seated, you simply need to let the staff know how you like your steak to be cooked, and the meal begins thereafter.
My meal started with the crisp green salad of organic leaves and walnuts tossed in a tangy mustard vinaigrette.

Next up is the highlight of the meal at La Vache! – 10oz (280g) USDA Double Gold Ribeye seared according to your preference and marinated for six hours. I chose my steak to be done medium-rare, and I must say it is beautifully executed, one of the best steaks I had recently.

I love the tenderness of the 60 days wet-aged beef and the rich flavour, yet without being too cloying on the palate. It goes very well with La Vache!’s house-made Béarnaise sauce.

The steak is served with unlimited frites too.

For desserts, while it is not part of the set menu price, I highly recommend picking a few items even for someone like me who is usually not big on desserts. The showmanship of the desserts come in the form of an impressive dessert trolley featuring house-made patisserie favourites such as Profiteroles (S$16), Lemon Meringue Tart (S$16), Cheesecake (S$16), and Raspberry Millefeuille (S$16).

I had their Cheesecake, and it is easily one of the best ones I have had in recent memory. It is not overly cheesy, and the texture is just right, so good that I ended up polishing it all up!

The Raspberry Millefeuille is equally good if you like this classic dessert, which comes in crisp delicious golden layer.

For beverages, it is a concise wine list alongside classic cocktail. I had their La Vache! House Wine (S$16) which is good enough to go with the steaks, a medium body wine from a blend of three grape varietals – Majority Merlot, some Cabernet Franc and some Cabernet Sauvignon.

Rants The fries were good, though on the salty side.
Will I Return Again? What I like most about La Vache! is that it offers a refined dining experience yet at an accessible price point. I also love the energy of the dining ambience and well-designed space, which makes it ideal for date nights or friends’ gatherings.
