Pumpkin bread seems like one of those fall treats you can’t really mess up. As long as it tastes like pumpkin, is packed with spices, and isn’t totally dried out, you have yourself a winner, right? Well…Joanna Gaines just posted a pumpkin bread recipe that she shares in an episode of Magnolia Table: At The Farm that is getting a bit of heat in the comments. The ingredients are just a bit too weird for some people who like to stick to the classics.

In a clip from the episode in question, Gaines walks us through how she likes to make her Brown Butter Pumpkin Bread, and right off the bat, she says that she “likes to add chocolate chips” to her recipe — and that’s enough to raise eyebrows immediately.

“Love pumpkin bread! No to chocolate chips though — anyone else???” one person commented on the post, to which someone else responded with, “Nope! I use pecans in/on my pumpkin bread.”

But as the recipe continues, there are other issues raised by those in the comments. Gaines mixes together her dry ingredients — flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg — and one commenter can’t believe just how much nutmeg Gaines uses.

“A tbsp of nutmeg is a lot, right?” they wrote. Someone responded, “That’s what I picked up also. And then just a teaspoon of cinnamon.”

If you look at the written recipe on the Magnolia website, this issue is cleared up. Gaines used a tablespoon of freshly ground nutmeg — but if you’re using dried nutmeg from your spice rack, then use just a teaspoon. Dried herbs and spices are much more potent than their fresh counterparts.

The brown butter and sugar are then creamed together in the stand mixer, along with eggs and water. Gaines then slowly adds in her dry mixture and tops the entire batter off with pumpkin puree. She folds in the chocolate chips and then pours the batter into a baking dish. The resulting bread looks moist, pumpkin-y, and super delicious.

Although this recipe may be a bit more unorthodox compared to others out there when it comes to the chocolate chips and brown butter, it’s definitely worth a try. You may just become convinced that chocolate chips do belong in pumpkin bread, after all!
