Salads in Greece extend beyond the classic “Greek salad”, or “Villager salad”, that most people are familiar with. Greece has a rich culinary tradition of eating locally and in season, and their salads showcase this. From lettuce-based salads mostly being consumed in the summer, to cabbage-based salads mostly being consumed in the winter, you can find fresh and tasty salads available year-round.

There are no strict rules to salads and each region (and family) might prepare them with their own twist, but I think there are two things that most Greeks can all agree upon. 1 – there’s no need for store-bought dressing because extra virgin olive oil with a bit of seasoning is enough, and 2 – there is no lettuce in a classic Greek salad. These recipes can be enjoyed no matter where you are, and I invite everyone to discover new flavours.

These Greek salads are ranked in my personal preference and to me, highlight the best of the Mediterranean diet.
