Hi everyone! Did you know that Egyptian Baladi Bread has finally arrived in the US through Trader Joe’s?
But today, I’m going to show you how to make the authentic Egyptian Baladi Bread right at home – the same bread Egyptians eat every single day! For this recipe, you’ll need just a few simple ingredients:
– 3 cups of whole wheat flour (or all-purpose flour if you prefer)
– 1 teaspoon of instant yeast
– 1 teaspoon of salt
– 1 teaspoon of sugar
– About 1 cup of warm water
That’s it! Super simple. First, mix the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
Slowly add warm water and knead until you get a soft dough – it should not be too sticky, not too dry.
Now cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rest for about 1 hour, until it doubles in size. After the dough has risen, divide it into small balls – about the size of your palm.
Roll each one into a flat circle, about 6 to 7 inches wide.
Dust with flour so it doesn’t stick, and place them on a tray.
Let them rest again for about 10 minutes. Now it’s time for the magic!
Preheat your oven to 500°F (260°C) or use a very hot skillet.
Place the dough directly on a baking stone or a hot pan.
In just a few seconds, you’ll see the bread puff up like a balloon – that’s the real sign of authentic Egyptian Baladi Bread! Look at this! Soft, fluffy, and full of flavor.
You can serve it with hummus, falafel, beans, or any Mediterranean dish.
In Egypt, we eat this bread with literally everything. So now you don’t need to just buy Baladi Bread from Trader Joe’s – you can make the real Egyptian version at home!
