Van der Westhuizen is a chef and proprietor of the Michelin-starred restaurant JAN in Nice, France although he has expanded his brand with various ventures.

You might have seen him on some Forage & Feast products in Checkers or watched ‘JAN’ the series, a culinary travelogue that captured his journey to earning the culinary world’s most coveted star.

He is also the owner of Klein JAN, located in the Kalahari, and Le Bistrot de JAN in Nice.

Van der Westhuizen has always been passionate about South African food and championing his heritage, bringing South Africa’s traditional cuisine to the world through his creativity.

For those who have been waiting for Jan to bring his expertise to SA cities, the wait will soon be over.

Chef Jan will be opening a Le Bistrot de Jan, the younger, slightly rebellious, à la carte sibling, in Cape Town.

According to Inside Guide, the Mother City iteration will officially open its doors in December 2025 at the InterContinental Table Bay Hotel, located at the V&A Waterfront.

Chef Giles Edwards, an accomplished Johannesburg-born chef and former owner of La Tête, will take the lead at the new restaurant.

Together, Edwards and Van der Westhuizen will be creating a menu that marries the soul of Cape Town with the timeless flavours of French cuisine.
