Had the pleasure of going to Alcade in GDL last night with my GF – often listen among the best restaurants in Latin America and on world top 100 lists, it was a great overall experience but not perfect.

The first course was the best – in had an amazingly tender and flavorful Lamb Tamale with yellow mole sauce (the orange color is from some tomato incorporated into the salsa) and my girl had clams with caviar that was exquisite.

Mains were good though not other worldly – I was very bummed as they’d just run out of their famed suckling pig, so I go the pork chicharrón with some very tasty frijole tacos. It was very good but not amazing. GF had a beautiful pulpo dish that again was very good but not truly special for a restaurant of this caliber.

The pictured cocktail was amazing! And the desert was great.

Serviced was very dutiful, almost too much so – really seemed to be pushing us to have another drink or cocktail.

Overall 8/10, and if it were not as hyped maybe I’d go 8.5 or 9 if this were an out of the blue restaurant for which I had no expectation.

About $250 US with tip – would cost 50-100% more in the states. I’d definitely go again.

Unlike some of the other top restaurants in GDL this really was about the food and taste profile even with some nicely done visual presentations. A lot of GDL is very good but more for show then pure culinary excellence.

That Tamale alone made it worth the trip, it was special.
