I've never seen this kind of growth on a rotting onion. I touched it with a glove and its like crystallized caviar. Any help?

    WHAT IS THAAAAATTTT😭😭😭😭😭

It’s possible something else dripped on it then hardened and caused it to rot. Looks like a sugar of some sort, maybe from fruit, bananas perhaps?

    I ran it through ChatGPT:

That black, almost granular growth pattern is characteristic of **black mold on onions**, specifically *Aspergillus niger*, a common fungus that causes what’s called **black mold rot**.

    A few details that fit:

    * The black bits often appear shiny or crystalline, almost like pepper granules or tiny beads.
    * They tend to cluster where the onion’s outer skin has broken down.
    * The surrounding whitish-gray mold and rot are also typical.
    * The fungus usually develops when onions are stored in warm, humid conditions or have been damaged.

It definitely didn’t “come out” as a secretion from inside the onion—it’s **fungal spores** forming on the surface. They can look deceptively like some foreign hardened substance but are actually the mold’s reproductive structures.

If anyone’s handling these, they should toss the whole bag immediately (mold spreads fast through the mesh) and wash their hands well afterward. *Aspergillus niger* spores can cause allergic or respiratory irritation in some people.

Might want to crosspost it on r/Mold and r/MoldlyInteresting.

If it is Aspergillus niger, you should get rid of it ASAP while trying to handle it as little and as carefully as possible. Disturbing the structures will release mold spores, and no one needs black mold spores in their home.

Actually, you should do that regardless of what type of mold it is.

If this was in a humid spot in your home, you might already have black mold somewhere, and this grew from spores already in your home.

Onions and potatoes have to be the two most nastiest things when they go bad.

Oof, black mold. Throw it out (like out of your house) quickly, but safely. These spores can travel fast

Onion smut, or “xonacoche” it’s actually a delicacy in some Central American cuisines and quite tasty.
