I first reviewed Tacos Don Cuco about five months ago. The other night, I was trying to hit up Tacos El Xolo, also a TJ-style stand near Boyle Heights, but forgot that they were closed on Tuesday nights. Then I tried — and failed again — to check out Tacos El Viejon (also in Boyle); they're supposed to be open on Tuesdays but they simply weren't where they were supposed to be. With all the ICE raids targeting street stands, it may be that they're laying low for now but there were plenty of other stands nearby so IDK.

After going 0-2, I figured, "screw it, at least I know Don Cuco should be open" so headed over there. Glad I did! Having just gone to Los Poblanos (the TJ-style stand in South Central) recently, I had a pretty good point of comparison and I have to say: Don Cuco's carne asada is as good as anywhere I've had (including Los Poblanos, Angel's, etc.). As I said last time "You could really taste the smokiness" and that was just as true this time. Add in the handmade tortillas and the fact that, on Tuesdays, these are just $2/each, and it's all wins. 9.5/10

Last time, I didn't like the al pastor but this time I tried the adobada and it was much, much better. Great flavor and hit all the notes I was hoping their al pastor would (but didn't). Would definitely get it again. 8/10

I did want to try something new there so I got a fourth taco with chorizo and that was just ok. Like, nothing special. 6.5/10

The important thing for me is that, until further notice, Don Cuco is my go-to TJ-style stand: 15 minutes away, excellent carne asada, super-affordable (and not just on Taco Tuesdays). Next time, I'll try their lengua, maybe a vampiro too.
