Warning, text post ahead. I promise in advance I'll follow up with the obligatory food porn pictures one day.
I'm a big BGE fan and I'm taking the leap to showcase my home cook skills at a local fest next year. I'm obsessing until the execution date. Ha The basic rules are that I need to have one chicken wing entry and one "egg dish". Everything else is up to me to try and win the people's best bite award through attendee voting.
I look to the community for scrutiny, questions, and menu optimization. Have you competed before? Lessons learned? Thanks and grill away!
Grilled rum pineapple (with blackened shrimp?)
Thick cut, grilled bacon with glazes (over smoked Mac and cheese?)
Steak on the coals sushi rice with chimichurri sauce
(buy sushi rice from restaurant, sponsor?)
Spicy Red devil meatballs (melt cheese on them?) pretzel sticks, gluten free?

Keep it simple. Optimize for picky, very mainstream tastes. Gimmicky works. I love gojuchang but do ANY of the people voting know what it is? Considering that when you’re naming dishes.
I’ve cooked at about five egg fest all in a local market that were poorly attended.
A few things come to mind.
Set your expectations accordingly. If you are the cool kid and it’s a popularity contest, you have nothing to worry about and will likely win. If not, or if the owner of the hardware store is cooking and his entire staff is voting, you may not stand a chance. So find out if it’s a blind tasting or a popularity contest.
I’ve done things like chicken and waffles grilled/smoked lemonade, grilled peaches with Greek yogurt and granola, and people loved it if not raved about it, but the clampets would have their whole family there, and they all voted against me for pulled pork that someone bought at famous Dave’s and passed off.
But don’t lose side of the fact that you were there to have fun first and foremost. Bonus if you meet some cool local folks, you can cook with and have a beverage from time to time.
