Jennifer Garner is giving fans a taste of her childhood.
In the 13 Going on 30 star’s latest installment of her Pretend Cooking Show, the actress shared her mother’s chicken enchiladas recipe.
She was joined by her mom, Patricia Ann “Pat” Garner, in the Instagram video posted Oct. 6, who was visiting Jennifer in Nantucket. In the clip, the pair followed Pat’s yellowed paper recipe.
The 87-year-old described the enchiladas as being mild and simply suggested, “If you want more heat, add it.”
The Alias alum offered to chop the vegetables in a nod to Pat’s unconventional cutting strategies in other cooking videos but stepped aside when it was time to make the filling.
Pat explained how she is “generous with the butter” in the shredded chicken, celery and onion filling and pushed the 53-year-old to amp up the amount of canned green chilis in the sauce (which also has cream of chicken soup and sour cream). “We’re wasting so many,” Pat said, going behind Jennifer’s back to add more chilis to the mix. “Oh, I love them.”
Jennifer, on the other hand, admitted she does not like canned green chilis, and didn’t say anything but looked pleadingly at the camera.
“I tell you and I tell you and I tell you,” Pat quipped to Jennifer’s questions about layering the ingredients. The faux-tension continued when the Elektra actress doubted Pat’s instruction and looked at the recipe card.
“The recipe, in this case, happens to agree with my mom,” Jennifer said, and Pat added, “Who’s been making them for many years.”
In her classically gentle fashion, Jennifer put the casserole in the oven and told it to “Do good.”
Before diving into the finished product, Jennifer suggested, “If you’re a cheese lover, you could put cheese inside of these and have a big cheese pull?” but Pat replied, “No.”
