2000 Viader Syrah, from fruit grown on Howell Mountain from a mixture of clones originally from Hermitage and the Barossa. This was part of a mixed auction lot. I viewed this as a bonus if it was still alive. And it is! Great color.

Black raspberry, black plum, supported by a bright lifting acidity. A hint of roasted meat. Then bitter chocolate comes out along with the black plums on the long polished finish.

Still mostly focused on secondary flavors, I think this wine has another 10 years left to fully develop the tertiary complexity I prefer. But a lovely wine.

Am surprised Viader doesn’t receive more recognition. Their Bordeaux blends are among the best I’ve had from Napa. Stunning property as well.

I’ve never had the honor of tasting wine from this vineyard. I have seen the bottle here and there.

Reading a little more about the winery
and this review, I’m really digging it. I’ll need to see if I can land a bottle to try out. Certainly not an inexpensive wine but could be a worthwhile investment.

Thank you very much for posting this review.

I hate to be that guy, but viader falls below the elevation for Howell.
