I've been asked whether I want the subscale as a Christmas present.
I of course don't need it, but it looks so cool…
I currently use a set of scales to weigh my beans and yield. The only workflow benefit will be that my scales will be able to live in my drip tray.
Anyone have / had it? What are your thoughts?

I don’t have it but it’s going to be the next thing I get as a gift lol
It looks cool, no doubt. But for my workflow it wouldn’t work. I have limited space and I tend to use my Timemore scale with the portafilter on it to directly weight the beans.
If it works for you, why not?
BTW how much does it cost?
Like with most coffee accessories: I don’t need it. But I have it. And I love it.
To me a scale needs to work for weighing output as well as beans. I couldn’t imagine trying to weigh an espresso shot with this, so it’s a no from me.
Extra waste IMO, you can’t double up and fit it under the portafilter to time and weigh extraction. It’s just a cool party trick for more clutter at this point.
I have it for my portable setup. It’s amazing!
I didn’t need it, but love it and wouldn’t want to miss it!
I’d had one for a long while before I realised how perfect it is to pull shots from my Flair 58 **directly into it**. (Yes, you can do that)
I’ve since adopted this for all my Espresso workflow, and would recommend to anyone that already has one, to try doing so.
I own one and love it
I’ve got one and it’s great – do I need it? No, but then most of my coffee gear is probably not needed!
Own one and love it. I use it to weigh the beans, spray, shake and pop them in the grinder (same for pour over). Other scale stays on the tray or under the filter setup. Very happy with it!
I have it and I love it.
And since my Felicita Arc lives on the drip tray of my port filter, I use the subscale for weighting out my beans
Best scale🔥 worth it 1000%
The only issue I have with it is that if you spray your beans with water before grinding, you get a few beans stuck on the wall when your pour them in the grinder, so you have to manually get them. Other than that it’s great
What’s up with the sub? There’s like 3/4 comments that are variations of the same response, which also mimics op title (i.e., I don’t need it but I want it). Are even such niche subs being infested by random bots?
I would imagine your scales would get dripped on instead of the drip tray
Totally cool and unneeded.
You can’t weight your shot or portafilter with it, so it’s of limited use. Looks pretty, though.
We use it in the Roastery when we open for Café operation. It is a solid scale, but has no explicit benefit to a traditional scale and cup setup.
I definitrly didn’t need it either, yet here it is 😎
Looks really cool but not sure if it is really needed.
I just use it as a travel scale, my only gripe with it is if pouring from a bag it’s harder to see what gram I’m at, and that’s not an enjoyable experience. At home I use the sub minimal as a dosing cup for my Acaia Pearl.
Dedicated bean scales, damn right!
I love mine! Not a need but a nice to have for sure.
got it and love it.
Yes, you need it!
I like the one from mhw3 bomber in wood. I use it all the time time.
You really don’t need it – I have it and I love it. I use it every day and it fits perfectly into my workflow.
Only problem now is that my Acaia is getting very little use and only measures the shot now…I think that’s totally fine
Have it, love it!
I need to up my game, I just use the metal thing with the wee holes in the bottom to scoop up the whole beans, seems every time I do that the ground beans are the perfect amount.
I almost wrote grinded.
I got mine for Christmas last year and even though I’ve babied it, it is now not reading accurately. At first it was awesome because I have a small machine and no room for a scale, as you can see the space under the brewhead, there is barely room left for the portafilter and ngl, it was fun while it worked because it made my routine so much more enjoyable and easy. Now, I’m just sad.

just buy it! i used it everday
I use mine exclusively to weigh beans (espresso and pourover). Means you don’t need a separate weighing container for single dosing and can leave the yield scale on the espresso machine. It’s not essential but certainly simplifies the workflow. And it’s more attractive than a typical scale.
It’s lovely I just posted my experiences with it
It’s nice, but I believe Flair also made one and it has a ceramic cup for drinking instead of plastic. If I bought something like this it would definitely be the Flair version. I’m waiting for my Kickstarter Bookoo scale now though.
If you single dose it’s worth the $50 100%
My black mirror scale wouldn’t hold a reading, so I gave the Subscale a whirl. If you don’t have another scale, this works well. So to the question of whether you need it, depends on what you need. I needed a scale.
