The yule log – an indulgent chocolate-flavoured cake decorated in rich buttercream, which is marked to resemble tree bark – is popular with kids, and big kids, alike at Christmas.
And it makes a delicious chocolatey alternative to traditional Christmas cake, pudding or stollen after your festive feast (or whenever you fancy really – ‘tis the season after all).
From white chocolate versions to ones oozing with salted caramel, our experts have found the best yule logs out there this Christmas – these are their favourites at a glance but keep scrolling for their full verdicts.
Best yule logs 2025How we test yule logs
The Good Housekeeping Institute tasting panel tried a wide range of chocolate yule logs from all the major supermarkets, as well as key brands, to find the best for Christmas 2025. To avoid bias, they were tasted blind, and we evaluated them on their aroma, flavour and presentation.
We were looking for a yule log with a light, airy sponge, generous cream filling, and rich chocolate icing.
Grab a spoon – these are the ones that came out on top.

Biscoff-Filled Yule Log 1.4 kg
Score: 79/100
At the other end of the spectrum is this option from vegan bakery Cake & Death, which has chucked the whole kitchen sink (including a pack of Biscoff!) at its decadent yule log.
Weighing in at a mighty 1.4kg, it’s a cross between fudgy brownie and decadent chocolate cake, with added biscuit chunks for extra crunch. You certainly wouldn’t know it was vegan to taste it.

Similarly to our winner, this supermarket log has a nostalgic, classic flavour profile which reminded our testers of being a kid at Christmas. While the sponge is light, the chocolate ganache icing is intense and fudgy, for a well-balanced bite.

Taste The Difference Millionaires Yule Log 846g
Score: 76/100
This hybrid dessert combines the sweet toffee and butterscotch notes you’d expect from millionaire’s shortbread, with a simple chocolate sponge.
The cake is topped with crunchy biscuit balls for contrast, and while some found it tasted slightly artificial, others were reminded of butterscotch Angel Delight (in a good way). Either way, we think it’s best saved for those with a serious sweet tooth!
