I’ve read that 1985 was a good year for Bordeaux, and since the love of my life is turning 40 this year, I thought it would be fun to find a wine from that vintage. I came across a bottle of Bordeaux Supérieur Château La Courtiade 1985, do you think something like that would still be drinkable today?

That specific bottle, I believe is on an auction online – I think I saw it recently.

I wouldn’t bid on that bottle since it’s one of the lowest tiers of Bordeaux wine (unless it is really cheap, then why not?). It was not made for ageing 40 years and was probably best in the early nineties. It will probably still be drinkable, but maybe not particularly enjoyable.

If you want a good ’85 Bordeaux, you’re probably looking at getting a cru classé. My advice would be to look at Vintage Port, since ’85 was a great year and the wines were definitely built to age (e.g. the Fonseca ’85 appears to be just entering its drinking window and is garnering a lot of praise).

Before you buy any bottle, I would check recent notes on CellarTracker to see how it is performing.

Drinkable yes, good I’m not sure. These kind of wines are not made to be kept for that long. But try you may have a good surprise!

1985 Bordeaux is currently in an excellent spot.

    But probably not this wine.

You’d likely need to spend $100+ on something that’s likely to still be good. The best wines will be $300+.
