I am on my yearly trip around the Mosel and had some nice dinners at a winery / friendly chats with the producers about this years harvest and expectations surrounding it. We came to talk about their and my own favourite wine styles, leading to the conclusion that old and sweet tickles our fancy if it is the occasion. The evening went on and he and his wife suddenly pulled the cork on the depicted bottle he got from his own cellar (but not winery). "We might aswell enjoy it together"
It was a stellar experience: 1990 Wintricher Ohligsberg Riesling Auslese
Despite its age, not yet super deeply golden in color and very lively in the nose. Grapejuice fruityness paired with faint herbal/wet stone aroma. Like a damp, warm day at a spring in the forrest. Also the slight mosel-typical petrol note and sweet citrus/stone fruits after some time in the glass. In the mouth very youthful, vibrant acidity that integrated well into the caramelly sugar. (Pine)apple, peaches and quints but also very soft "aqueous" flavours of pear and maybe melon. That wine could have easily taken on another 10 years until it reaches a truly mature stage and present the full "crème brûlée" package. At this point is was a best of both worlds riesling auslese.
Please forgive my amateur-esque description, i am not formaly wine educated. Just your next door guy going enthusiastically about his hobby. I am happy to improve upon your critique and try better next time 😀
