I love Costco’s Kirkland wines — is this one any good? 🍷
What would you recommend pairing it with this weekend?

  1. Yeah, for sub $20, most of Kirkland’s old world wines are pretty damn tasty.

Yes. Kirkland wines are pretty much always solid. That’s a great price too.

They acquire their wines from excess wine inventory from very good wineries that do not want to put so much product on the market. Therefore, they blend some good stuff.

For $18.99 I’d take a risk on pretty much any Chateauneuf du Pape.

I tasted it and said “No.” yes it’s inexpensive. But it didn’t taste good. And I tasted it blind.

Yes, it is CdP. Yes, it is only $18.99 for a CdP. But, for me, it is a resounding NO. There are scores of C de Rhones out there for the same $ or less that outperform this by a mile. If in a better market, add a Rasteau.

I was not impressed. The Gigondas is far better for cheaper.

In my experience there is quite a bit of vintage variation on the Kirkland stuff, some years better than others, the CDR is a definite buy for me when I can find it

I’m gonna go with a no on this one. The southern rhone Kirkland wines I’ve found to be by far the weakest of their lineup (excluding their Gigondas, that one is great.) Sure the price is good for CdP, but the two vintages I’ve tried were disjoined alcoholic messes.

No idea since I’m not in the US, but generally cheap wines from expensive appellations are not worth it. Better to get a better Cote du Rhône for that money.
