Another popular restaurant has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as challenges with inflation, high labor and food costs, and changes in consumer habits have created a competitive market.

The popular Italian-American bistro chain Pinstripes filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Sept. 8, in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

The Illinois-based eatery is an entertainment-focused restaurant known for its bowling, bocce, and made-from-scratch food. At its height, it operated 18 restaurants across 10 states and Washington D.C., but it had to close 10 locations after filing for bankruptcy. It previously had plans to expand further with more locations.

According to the court filing, Pinstripes had accumulated a debt of about $143 million. The company secured $3.8 million in financing and is in search of a buyer for its remaining eight locations.

This move toward bankruptcy was a year in the making and “reflect the Debtors’ only remaining path to maximize value,” per the filing. Pinstripes was also recently delisted on the New York Stock Exchange.

The company stated, “Unfortunately, economic deterioration over the past year resulted in decreased revenue and eroded the Debtors’ restructuring alternatives.”

For the fiscal year ending on April 27, 2025, Pinstripes reported that roughly 80% of its revenue came from food and beverage sales and about 20% came from games; and the total annual revenue totaled to about $129 million. Each location brings in approximately $7.4 million in annual revenue.

“We are grateful for your continued trust and understanding, and remain committed to delivering the hospitality and experiences you’ve come to know and love,” the restaurant posted in a statement on Instagram.

The “eatertainment” restaurant isn’t the only restaurant that has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection over the past years. Other chains and local spots have succumbed to tariff pressures, changes in customer demand, and lingering issues as a result of the pandemic.

The Texas-based restaurant Abuelo’s and the South Florida restaurant Marian’s Bagels also recently filed for bankruptcy. Other retailers such as JCPenney, Claire’s, Forever 21, and At Home have also faced economic issues leading to store closures or bankruptcy filings.
