One of the most fascinating aspects of travel is seeing the local flora and fauna. Animals can be particularly interesting, especially when you get an adorable surprise interaction, just like one couple did during their memorable meal near the Colosseum in Rome, Italy.

The couple in @apharseira’s October 18 video couldn’t be more shocked when they noticed a curious onlooker getting a good sniff of their meals. It was a curious street rat! From the rodent’s perfect perch merely inches away to the way its nose twitches with every sniff, it’s impossible not to watch this hilarious interaction again and again.

LOL, this rat has no shame! It’s getting up close and personal with the restaurant visitors as if it were part of their party, but the couple at the table isn’t feeling so nonchalant. In fact, the look on the woman’s face is absolutely priceless!

“Well, give your compliments to the chef,” @jastaurak16 joked in the comment section. She wasn’t the only one to compare this hilarious animal encounter to the beloved Disney movie Ratatouille—someone even compared the woman’s expression to the food critic from the film—but she may be the only person who could tell who this rat really is.

But seriously, how cute is this four-legged party crasher? Rats have gotten an unfair reputation for being ‘dirty,’ but in reality, they’re incredibly smart and resourceful. In fact, it would’ve been nice to see the rat get a piece of pasta for his efforts!

Rats in Rome

Although rats can be found almost everywhere, especially in major cities, Rome has seen a rise in their local rat population in recent years. In fact, a video went viral in 2023, revealing just how many rats are living at the Colosseum! Although the city increased its cleaning efforts in response to the video, rats are clearly still thriving nearby.

If you look closely, you can see the Colosseum in the background of this video! It’s hard to beat views like that while enjoying pizza and pasta, though only a few lucky patrons get a glimpse of Rome’s rodent residents, who are never far away.
