Oh, Zoe, it’s too wet right now outside. I thought I was going to get out here before it started to rain. No, it’s raining. Look, my shirt. I found that at Aldi’s one day. Let’s take a look and see what damage there has been with the rain. I don’t know how much rain we’ve gotten, but we’ve gotten a lot of rain. You know what? Oh, I got to empty that. That’s where the ginger and the turmeric turmeric is growing. Uh, and this is the glass door. It started raining, let’s see, about 2:30 in the morning and then it was a real downpour. The biggest problem was the wind. Oh, I am getting wet. I’m going to ruin everything I’m using. But hold on. Nope. I thought I saw a coyote watching me. So, the hummingbirds has been the biggest issue. Um, because everything was blowing off. The front yard looks the same. You know what? This is going to be a garden tour. Middle of October since this is our first major major rain in a long time. Oh, I’m going to have to turn you around to see what is going on. Let me turn you around. So, we’re going to go up the driveway. This is my cabbage. This is why I’m not sure if I want to grow cabbage. Now, this is the second cabbage. The first one was really big. The only problem with cabbage is it’s it’s a vegetable you’ve got to wait for for a long time unless you’re going to use the leaves as it grows. And I like growing things that are really quick. So, we’ve got a lot of water, which is normal for here. And you can see Gary cuts trenches around. This is just uh an area where I’m growing cutings and there was extra turmeric. This is the Oh, it is going to come up. This is the ginger from Aldi. See? So, that one’s growing. The other one, no. And look at this. That’s turmeric. Got to get all that water dumped. I’ll do it a little bit later. Here’s the butterfly garden. Here’s the chairs. Not chairs, the cars that I bought years and years ago. Still doing really nice. The tomatoes are still growing, but you know, we’re starting to get cold for them. And they’re really determinate tomatoes, so they may be semi done. Look, we have a pond. Look how nice it looks. Now, we don’t want a pond here. Let me zoom you out a little bit so you can see more. Okay, so the butterfly garden is going to love this. Look at fresh rain. Look at the sky. Better yet, the air smells so good. Ravens are all over. Let’s kind of do a quick walk around. This will be very different. It is raining, so I don’t want to stay out here too long. If I didn’t say it, I’ll say it again. Hi, this is Robbie from Southern California where we had the devastating major storm come through. For us, it wasn’t too bad. There has been tornado watches. I don’t know if any tornadoes hit, but we’ve had thunder, we’ve had pouring rain, and the amount of wind was unbelievable, which right now it’s not blowing at all. And Gary was very happy. A lot of those palm leaves on the top there came down. Collected quite a few. So that was really good. Oh, look. The bees are even out in the rain. Is that something? So this is the Mexican sage. This we’re going to cut down. This is the milkweed, but there’s eggplant in there and we’re missing our eggplant because we don’t see it half the time. So we’re going to trim that back down. Gonna trim a lot of this here. Got rid of the old tomato plants that weren’t doing anything so I can actually get into the totes. I’d like to get a lot of green Swiss chard growing because that’s something I really enjoy eating. Still have squash I didn’t pick two weeks ago. I need to just pick it. And this would be a good time because it’s gotten really good water. Slice it up and freeze it. There’s the two there. And I think there’s one in Oh yeah. Oh my goodness. Look down here. Can you see that? Unbelievable. I’ll get that today or tomorrow. Then I’ll get rid of the old stuff. Just start composting that. Celery. I want to get all the seeds off. I don’t want the seeds from the green celery. I’ve got plenty of celery. If I ever want celery, once you start and you let it one of them go to seed, it’ll constantly recede itself. And you can just pick the little celery and then just move it anywhere you want. Just pull it out of the ground. tomatillos. One big bush and they’re all over the ground. We’ve been picking those and I’ve been freezing those. I haven’t been out here. Look at the ravens all hanging around. Everything is wet. You don’t see things wet around here that often. Look at this. We’re just going to walk around because what I’ve been doing is mainly maintenance. And I’ll tell you, with the rain today and yesterday, there’s a pepper in there. The pepper. I don’t know if this will make a comeback. There’s a little bug. Take that little bug off. I don’t know if that will make it, but we got a lot of Malibar spinach. Oh my goodness. Look at this. This is creepy. Look at the size of that hornworm. Look at the size of that thing. Jeeez. He’s having a feast, isn’t he? And what’s on over here? I don’t know if I’ll do something different next spring. Maybe I’ll change things up in the buckets. I always change things around. Definitely want to get green Swiss chart. I actually don’t like the taste of the red, though. I still want to grow it because I add that to my green drinks to add in some nutrients. But as far as eating it, I really do like the green Swiss chard. That’s what’s going on here. I haven’t had a water. Look how beautiful that goes in my green drinks. Purple tree colored growing in a tote. See, that’s the type of plants I like to grow. I want to grow things that I plant once and I don’t have to think about it for a few years. That’s the easiest way to garden. Tomato plants, a lot of them will grow two years. red vein sorl to add to my green drinks or a little bit to salad. Again, you plant it, you don’t have to think about it for years, even the green. And that’s just the way I like to grow things. So, I do grow a lot of different things. You know that. Now, this is gorgeous, but in the next couple months, it’s going to start fizzling away. And once it starts to die back, the green growth, that’s when you go in there and you want to pick it. Can I go ahead and harvest my turmeric now? And there’s some ginger there. Ginger didn’t do as well this year, but turmeric did okay. See, it’s starting to yellow up a little bit. You can, but your tubers, your ryomes in there are going to be small because all the growth went to the top. Now, as it starts to die back, it’s going to pull all the nutrients from the leaves. Look at this. I told you there was a coyote following me around. I don’t even know where Gary is. Anyways, the nutrients will go back from the leaves into the ryzones and then your ryomes will be healthier and bigger and that’s what you want to eat. Look at this. What does he want? Hold on. I don’t know what he wants. Oh, that’s the big one. That’s the big one. I don’t know what he wants. And when I turn my back, he starts to come after me. I don’t know what he’s doing. Let’s see if we can hide over here. We’ll hide and see if he sees us. May not come back. There’s nothing here for him. The last thing he needs is water. Okay. I’m not afraid of him. Nope. He He goes They come around here and they hang around here. I know that. He went behind the trees there, the big fus tree. Then you’ve got the olive tree over there. Now, the olive tree is a wild type of olive. So, we don’t get anything for us to eat, but the birds do. So, the birds are hanging around when it starts to throw fruit. I would like to get some really good olive trees. I think Gary’s got a real one, but it hasn’t thrown fruit yet. No, he’s not going to come back cuz now I challenged him. He was following me. Told you he was following me out front and then he decided, “No, she sees me. I’m leaving.” Okay, so let’s keep going here. So, my chair garden, as you know, is one of my favorites. We’ve already passed that up. Look, I can propagate all around the bottom. Look at all the geraniums and things I’ve got on the bottom. I can propagate there and then move it anywhere I want. And that’s what’s great. We’re just going to do a quick walk through because I have to keep doing hummingbirds. What I had to do with the wind, we have no wind now, is I have to keep my Hold on. Hold on. So, when I turn my back, then he comes through back there. And so, for some reason, he wants to follow me. Maybe he thinks I have never fed them. It’s the last thing you want to ever do is feed coyotes. But for some reason, maybe because of the rain, he wants to follow me. So, he comes back out and then he starts following me. I don’t know. Now, there is one around here that a neighbor told me he did look a little silver that he looks silver and they think it might be a hybrid. We don’t know. And then there’s another one that’s massive. He looks more like a wolf. No, he hasn’t come back. I don’t think he’s come back. We’re going to go further back to the house. Oh, he is there. Hold on. That stinker. I don’t know what he wants. When I turn my back, he’s following me. Crazy. Okay, let’s keep going. So anyways, you want to really harvest turmeric when it’s completely done and then you get the best ryomes because everything’s pulled out of the leaves, goes into let’s say the root area and they store all that all winter until it’s time for them to grow again. And that’s what you want. You can harvest it now, but they’ll be smaller. I’m just making sure he’s not coming back. You know, usually the ravens let me know when there’s one around. They scream, but they’re not here right now. They’re probably out foraging. So, that’s the best time to harvest them when it’s completely brown. And that’s what we’ll do. I’ll do it a little bit later. Probably, let’s see, we’re middle of October. I’m going to say middle of November or into December. though you can harvest them anytime. Carrie wanted to get rid of my chairs. I said, “No, not yet. Maybe the foam one, unless I rip all the foam off because I have so many chairs, but I want to start setting up a lot for the birds. Start painting these up, putting totes on them, and then letting everything decompose, especially out here. And it will get little bits of uh little flies, the the fruit flies, and I’ve seen the worblers coming. They’ve been coming from all over coming down looking for it. Here is the dog kennel. It’s been doing fantastic. He’s got his papo growing in there. Well, it’s my papo. His po, whatever. And then I’ve got a squash. I don’t know if it’s really going to grow, but I got a squash, a butternut on the bottom. And then I’ve got full of peppers all through there. You can probably just I’m not going to walk through there because if I walk through there, look what’s going to happen. It’s just I’m going to be drenched. me and my camera and everything. But I’ve got yellow peppers, orange peppers, red peppers, more red or dark orange, more yellow back there. I’ll tell you something. Buying those peppers from Walmart and growing the plants have been unreal. Look at more orange peppers up there. Everywhere I stick them, there’s been times I’ve been leaving them in the cups and they’re growing. So, I really need to get them transplant. I want to keep my my wits with me because I don’t know what he’s doing. He doesn’t look sick, so I don’t have to worry about that. He might just be curious as to what I’m doing. Everything’s wet. When was the last time you saw everything wet like that here? Probably close to a year ago. This I was worried about. This was soil that came out of my potatoes I harvested and it wasn’t that good. Okay, we’re okay. Oh, I didn’t want to do that. I’m starting to plant walking onions in here. I might have dropped it. If I did, I’ll get more. And these, hold on. Okay, let’s just leave it. These are tomato plants coming up. But that is walking onions. And then I’ve got my flowers. I want to harvest a lot more seeds. And then this is the small one. Let’s go over here. I’ve been work using this for lettuce and for propagating in here. So, this worked out really good. See, I’ve got the baby lettuce growing old there. I don’t really need this. Some tomatoes came up, but there is a turmeric that was in there that came up in in there. And then the cutings, a purple tree colored. I’m going to leave the thyme in here all winter because it’s from last year. It did really good. So, I’m leaving it in the pot, but I’m putting it see layered. So, the roots will go down into the other pot. And then more lettuce there. And then I’m propagating some geraniums and more tree collars. Let’s go out here. Okay, that little stinker is making me nervous because off and on I look behind me and I believe I see them. So, I’m going to redo all the potatoes. I’m not sure where or when. There’s another tomatil potato mint that will die back when it gets really cold. Miraolds everywhere. They recede themselves, which is really nice. Gary told me he’s not doing anything with this right now, so I can do whatever I want. So, I haven’t decided what I’m going to do with it, and I’m I don’t want them to put the roof on, but we’ll see. I’m going to cover that one. I’m going to use that for the winter. The dog kettles will be a year round garden. Doesn’t matter if it’s winter, summer, fall, spring. It’s going to be used all year. So, I will be getting ready to change that over into a winter garden. But right now, everything is still growing and have cucumbers. Look, I can’t believe the cucumbers are still growing. We can probably see I’ve got tomatoes here growing down here. And then here, you saw the peppers. Here’s a cucumber. Look at that. I’ve been picking them. I think there’s more down there. Just picked the last of my watermelon. Let’s go this way. Okay. Hear the dog. The coyote is probably over there right now. That’s what they’ll do. They’ll roam through. Then this is the rainbow garden again. Everything is just wet. Now, this I’m going to definitely get to. I did not get to it this year. So, in the winter, I’m going to start going through. I’m going to cut all the milkweed back because really the butterflies are pretty much gone. And I’m going to pot them in pots so I can move the milkweed around. It’s always good to cut your milkweed down, especially this type. Oh, look. A poppy loves that is coming up in there. A seed got in there. So, I’m going to cut it back and then I’m going to get all these totes ready for spring and I’m going to do it all winter. So, come spring I’m going to plant. So, that will be great. Again, red bane sorl. This is papino. There’s some peppers in there as you can see. Not the best looking, but they’re still growing peppers. See the water from the rain? I’m going to have to dump a lot of that. This is different. Trying to go slow. Now he was following me. See, he started from the street when we came through and I thought I saw him. So he followed me, but he stayed up on top and then he came around the bottom and he was watching me. Okay. And then what’s here? Oh, papaya trees. Papaya plants. See the walking onions? I’ve been collecting them and just sticking them in totes. There’s not even enough soil in there. Going to have to kind of go through here. I’ve got papayas in here. And these are the Mexican. I want to take care of that. Those are Mexican papayas. And then these in here, both of them are strawberry papayas. So, we’ve kind of made a circle already. So, we can just step into the bird garden for a moment. I don’t know if you can see the hummingbird. Yes, you could. Isn’t that nice? I like this because this particular garden is lowmaintenance. Even though it’s set up for the butterflies and the hummingbirds, I have a lot of food through there. Look at all the Malbar spinach. Let’s see if we can get a little closer. That’s all Malbar spinach. I’m using that. And then you see tomatoes growing through there and eggplant. I’ve got mint. Whether I’m using it for my green drink, which I use in my green drink, I use the orange mint. And then if I’m making tea, I use the chocolate or peppermint. But I’ve got both in there. The lighter colored one down here is an orange mint. And then the other mint next to it. Let’s see. This is chocolate mint. Now the ravens are screaming. I don’t see them, but they scream. They let me know if there’s a coyote around. And then I’ve got through here, I’ve got a watermelon left in there. I think I’ve picked that watermelon. There was a watermelon in there. And then see more tomatoes. and celery and stuff. There’s a lot of food, so I can And of course, purple tree colored, a few of them in there. Walking onions are in there. Garlic chives are in there. So, I can even spot more food in there, which would be really nice. And then continue with the flower. See, I’ve got there, I don’t know if we walk by so fast, the real red Swiss chart, which is really nice to use. All right, let’s go back. And we already walked down there. Look at all the water. We have a lake. Can’t do much with the lake, but it’ll be gone in a couple days. And let’s see. So, we’ve got through here, the pizza garden, which now is really an herb garden, is doing good. See, this is starting to die back. This turmeric, it should have gotten bigger. Much too small. Normally, they’re 3 4 foot tall. And I just think we had a cooler summer than normal because they really do appreciate very warm nights. And we did not have warm nights. And then we’ve got Gary’s, you saw it last time, the Thai basil, which he really likes. And that’s, look at the basil plant coming up there. This basil is from last year. It made a wonderful comeback. I did collect some seeds and I’m going to use that in the spring. I’ll go ahead and restart some. Maybe it will make it again. And here’s another pepper plant all from Walmart. I didn’t even buy any pepper plants. I like them because they use the term sweet, which means it tastes like a bell pepper. You know, it’s it’s a pepper. It’s not sweet, but it’s not hot, which is nice. Sometimes you’ll get one or two that have a little bit of heat, but nothing that would bother you in any way. And then look at the hummingbirds. Lunch is still here again from a cutting. And this is what I’m collecting. All the walking onions. There’s still a few around. See, here’s one here. If I don’t collect them soon, they’ll just die back. So, I’ve been going through collecting them and dropping them in pots and and milk cartons that I’ve been collecting and different things. All right, let’s take a peek in the bird garden and then I better get in and dry everything off. Something was eating my eggplant. I am suspecting a squirrel. And I still may have to wrap it with tulle. It doesn’t touch my peppers. There’s more peppers. They keep growing and growing and on the top they pick and pick. But, um I’m going to have to cover this. And this is milkweed growing with a walking onion. Pceline. We grow a lot of pceline around here and use that in green drinks. I don’t see them. Anyways, now we’re going into bird garden. So, I have never had a coyote follow me in a bird garden. I’ve never seen one even on all the cameras. That’s another place they like to hang out. The deer hang out there. And then the coyotes, the rabbits you see, and of course the squirrels and the birds. I mean, they have a little piece of nature, which they really do need. I mean, think about if you’re in the city. What do they have to really hang on to? I mean, where can they go? Oh, I see birds on the ground. You know why? Cuz the feeders were so wet. Let me close the gate. That Gary said he was putting seed on the ground, but I told him I went ahead and put holes. I covered this cuz something was chewing up this. So, it started, you know, see that’s not covered. I need to make a better cover. But, as long as the roots take hold, then I can move it anywhere. It’s not supposed to stay there anyways. And then here’s my papaya. We’re doing it backwards, which is really nice. The tomatoes made a big comeback, which is unbelievable. Uhoh. I don’t want hornworms on this one. That looks like hornworm. They go to the top and eat the plant down. I’m gonna have to look through now. It’s very possible in here that a bird may have found it. We don’t have any orioles right now who eat a lot of hornworms. We still have mocking birds and they will. And there’s other birds that will too, but I will have to Oh, there he is. Sometimes you just don’t want them on the plant. I hate to do this, but I can’t. I can’t have hornw worms on everything. Look at the size of them. He’s going to have to go for a ride. And if he makes it back, that’s his thing. But I can’t keep that many because I don’t want to lose this plant. And I’m telling you, a hornworm like that can completely take the plant down. I left the other one, but I want this because look at they ate the entire plant. And I want to get another set of tomatoes cuz it’s starting to grow all through there. So sometimes I leave them, but at that size there’s no birds that will take them. Not that we have here. Let’s see. Let’s walk through. It’s quiet. Can you see? You probably can’t see the birds, but they’re on the ground. We We set up tables and there’s seed all over. Those are doves right now. We just want to make sure that the spice fences get food, too. Again, everything is really wet and tried to pull things around that we didn’t want to be, you know, have sitting out in the water. They were calling for about three inches of rain and we probably did get that with all the rain. My cutting of my blanket flower. This is great. I’m thinking of starting to do flower displays in my spare time. I’d like to do some different flower arrangements, but we’ll see how time goes. I’ve got so many flowers. It would be so nice to do that. And then I’ve got lemon verbina. That’s the little one I bought from the nursery and it’s getting bigger. I’ll have to find the place for it. Look at this. Is that not gorgeous? Absolutely beautiful. That’s the Kufia, the batface one. Just beautiful. Okay, the fountains are off. Those two are electricity. The ball and the big one back there. But there’s no reason to have a fountain on right now. Look at the flowers. More zenyas. I grow so many zenyas and I don’t even have to do anything but sprinkle some seeds. And they just grow everywhere. Flower arrangements. I don’t know why I came up with that, but I have an idea. It’s not actually for me. It’s for the birds. And I’ll explain that later. We’ve got white crowns here. Now we’ve got so many birds. And then I put my cutings here cuz I didn’t want them to be overloaded with water. Look, I’ve got lettuce. This one’s gonna take really good. These are the ones I did on the video. They’re doing really good. Look at that. So, we made a circle. I have to get in. It’s actually cold out here. It’s not bad for us. We’re wimps. When it gets into the 50s, we’re cold. See how Gary did? He moved some of the feeders last night. And then he uh went ahead and set some tables up and different things. He did not do dragon fruit last night. Oh, he didn’t expect me to be here. He said it wasn’t worth it with the rain. And he’s got hundreds. He must have frozen over a hundred dragon fruit. Unreal. There’s birds down there. They’re all through here. This is going to tip. I’m going to have to move that. I saw that yesterday and I thought I’ll change it up later. Oh, look. My statue is not getting wet because it’s got an umbrella, but I thought this would be different. Grab the camera. Go out in the rain. We’ve got a break right now. It’s still supposed to rain a little bit. Let’s walk through here again. Red man soro. Look at the beautiful deraniums I got. Oh my gosh. I think those are called black beauty. And they are just Yes, they’re black beauty. Just beautiful. More mint, chocolate mint, pineapple, sage. You know, these totes are probably getting close to 10 years old now. 10 years old. The big thing with totes, even though they’re getting look the wind in this in the sun, I always water them at least a couple times a week and there’s always some sort of soil in there and it’s kept it. It’s kept it in really good shape. How much longer it will take, you know, and stay that one also is about 10 years old. I don’t know, but when it starts to go, it goes. Right now, it’s perfect. So, I’ve got uh garlic chives growing in there, chocolate mint growing in there, and then peppermint. Then I’ve got some orange mint back there. Geraniums. This was put here. This is in a big pot. I put this here to shade the pineapple sage because it doesn’t like the sun at the base, so it’s used for a shade plant. Look at this chart magenta. Is that not gorgeous? With the walking onions that are still walking and then peppers. any I had a little pepper, but where am I going to put it? I’ll stick it up here. We’ve been picking peppers, quite a few off of this one. And then when I have leaves, okay, that’s got a walking onion on it. This one does not nothing gets tossed out in the trash. Just put it there. And that’s all there is to it. And that plant is broccoli. I planted and it grew some broccoli spares and now it’s just a big bush. I mean, look how big it is with the leaves. And I picked a ton of them yesterday cuz I made a green drink from them. Look at that. Aren’t they gorgeous? Sometimes they can live four or five years, which is why I like growing those types of plants. Well, that’s it. I’m going to go in. Let’s look over. I know Gary’s not I don’t think he’s in his garden, but that’s Gary’s garden down there. He’s got all that passion fruit, which he’s freezing, growing. He’s got um banana plants down there, of course. And then you can see the dragon fruit and he’s got papayas still growing down there of course with all his greens and everything. The gak fruit he’s got. What a view. Isn’t that something? Everything is wet now. Oh, look at the orange tree over there. You know, the thing is it may just continue to stay cool and we may have wet weather. I doubt it. But if we don’t and it gets really warm, guess what’s going to happen to all these hillsides that they just took all the weeds off of? You got it. It could all start growing back. So, I don’t know what’s going to be. And then we’ll have dragon fruit here soon. Well, not so soon. Probably in about a month. Look at that. Oh, the poor bee is all wet. Look. He says, “I’m so wet. This is a lemon verbina. Again, this is a small herb that you buy. And look how big it got. So, I hope you enjoyed the Oh, this one doesn’t have a hole in it. See what happens when they have a hole. They’ll drain and the birds will still eat everything. They can’t eat this. I can spill the seed on the ground and they’ll eat it wet, but they can’t eat it like this. These all have holes. So, the seed is wet. I hear the spice finches in there. They can come in and eat wet seed. That’s not a problem. And it drains from the bottom, but they can’t eat seed that’s underwater. So, that’s Oh, look. Blue sky. Did not see that yet today. Oh my goodness. Oh, wow. Look at And tomatoes. Can you believe this little one came up? Now, this might have been a cutting I started, but I’m not 100% sure. It looks like it had a hornw worm, but I don’t see anything. The birds hang around here a lot. So, that’s it. This was very different. So, I hope you enjoyed this walkabout in the rain. Even though it’s not raining right now, we’ve got a little bit of blue sky up there. Just a little bit, but a little bit is greatly appreciated. And we had such nice weather to walk out here considering it was pouring just about a half hour ago.
