Making apple butter takes about five ingredients. At home, we would make it two gallons at a time. I’m going to make one cup of it today just to show you guys. And because I’m kind of hungry for apple butter, I have some cinnamon swirl bread here that I want to spread it on. You need unsweetened applesauce. It’s very important that you use unsweetened. And we’re going to add sugar to it and put it in whatever dish you’re going to use to bake it because you need to bake this. It’s oven baked apple butter. We’re going to add just a teeny little bit of cinnamon. If you’re making more, it takes more. And we also have a little bit of cloves. And our fifth ingredient is some apple cider vinegar. You can use regular white vinegar, too, but I like my apple cider vinegar. Just mix that stuff together. And then we stick it in the oven to bake it. You have to stir it every 20 minutes. You have to bake it covered. I will be back once this is done baking. It’s supposed to take about 3 hours, which is the hardest and longest part about making this apple butter. We just got our apple butter out of the oven. Now I’m going to taste it and see if it’s any good. As you can see, it reduced down. It got a lot darker and thicker. And I’m going to put it on some cinnamon swirl bread. As I had told you guys before, the recipe for this bread is also in my cookbook along with this apple butter recipe. If you want to make it really good, put some butter on the bread before you put apple butter on. Let’s take a bite and see if it’s good. It’s hot, but it is delicious. I knew it would be because it always is. Whenever we made this at home, we would always put it in a big roster pot and put it in the oven. But I know when my mom made it when she was a little girl, they used to use a huge cast iron pot and just boil it in there until it boiled down. That would have been good, too. And it was not a pot you put on a stove pot. It was a pot you put outside that was on legs that you build a fire underneath to use.
