Hi all! Sorry it took so long for this update but I haven’t had extra time in lab until now. These photos were taken with a microscope on 1000x magnification. 1 slides: yeast, probably saccharomyces cerevisae (it’s much larger than some of the other yeasts I’ve seen in class like Candida albicans. So that was cool) 2: the gram stain isn’t the best but this is probably lactobacilli spp (bacteria). 3: these look to be gram positive bacteria and maybe some tiny yeasts. I’m thinking some normal skin flora like Staph. epidermidis and/or micrococcus. Probably came from my finger when I use it to scrape the spoon. Also could be something else entirely. They were really small. 4: this was a direct gram stain of my starter (mixed culture). You can see a lot more bacteria than yeast which I thought was interesting. There seemed to be two main organisms in this original stain- a yeast and a bacteria, which I seemed to have isolated well enough. It’s possible there could be more stuff that I missed. Anyway, I thought it looked really cool and pretty under the microscope. Some of these pictures aren’t the best so sorry about that lol. It’s way harder than it should be to take a photo through a microscope.

I’ve seen amazing pictures of incredible sourdough loaves, but THIS is singularly the coolest pic I’ve seen in here! Thanks for posting!

  4. Hell yea, thank you for sharing! The struggle of taking photos through a microscope without a mount is too real.

This is so cool. I love seeing the actual microbes in action.
