Today we’re diving into the absolute must-tries when in Sicily. We are at a proper, no-frills, hole-in-the-wall spot that promises authentic Sicilian flavours. We got their grilled swordfish. This is a seriously thick piece of fish steak, with perfect grill marks. It’s Sicilian style, cooked simply, letting the fish speak for itself. The texture was kinda tough and meaty, and the best way I can describe it is that it’s the least fish-like fish I’ve ever encountered. If you’re someone who usually shies away from seafood, this might be your gateway. Next up, a dramatic plate of squid ink pasta arrived. The colour on the spaghetti definitely stands out. It tastes briny, with a subtle hint of sweetness. Eating it was an experience in itself, we definitely needed to keep a piece of tissue handy to avoid looking like we had wrestled a squid. Our final taste of Sicily’s seafood specialities was the sardine pasta. You can really taste the oiliness of the sardine, which might sound off-putting, but it actually adds a rich depth to the dish. It’s a bold flavour, certainly not for the faint of heart, but undeniably authentic and surprisingly moreish once you get past the initial punch. That’s seafood in Sicily. How many ‘s’ words did I blabber? Loads.
