It’ll be his first solo venture
Not long after opening the massive 22 Bishopsgate project in the City (including an outpost of his Asian-inspired concept Lucky Cat and chef’s table High, from the three-star Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea) Gordon Ramsay also acquired the old Le Gavroche site in Mayfair.
First opened by Albert Roux and Michel Roux Sr in 1967, Le Gavroche was the first restaurant in the UK to be awarded one, two and three Michelin stars (the third star was lost in 1993). In 1981 the restaurant, known for its classical French fine dining food, moved to Brook Street in Mayfair, and Gordon Ramsay himself spent time in that kitchen in 1989. Michel Roux Jr took the reins of Le Gavroche in 1991 and remained at the helm until he decided to close the iconic restaurant in January 2024, after 56 years in business, to pursue a better work/life balance. He now runs Chez Roux at The Langham.
Matt Abé, who’s spent 18 years working with Ramsay, most recently as chef patron of the three-star Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, is heading up the new project. Called Bonheur by Matt Abé, the restaurant (his debut solo spot) will serve modern fine dining food across a la carte and tasting menus, alongside six-seater chef’s table experience Petit Bonheur.
Speaking about the opening, Abé said: “Bonheur translates to ‘happiness’ in French, so for me, Bonheur is a place of escapism. We’re breathing new life into an iconic site, creating a space that is elevated without overwhelming; that is warm, timeless, and comfortable; and that celebrates community, craftsmanship, and the bounty of the British Isles.”
