I bought these squash out of the Halloween novelty squash section which is in the food isles. Anyone know if they're good eating and if so, are they likely to be F1 or heirloom? Thinking ahead if they're particularly tasty. Banana for scale.

  1. Those are just acorn squash. They’re delicious.

I doubt the banana is heirloom /s

The lower, darker squash is an acorn squash should be just fine. The top one, maybe a variation of a delicata?

  3. One is a carnival squash and the other is an acorn squash. Both delicious.

As long as they’re not bitter they’ll be good to eat. If bitter they could be toxic — not intensely toxic so you can lick a cut piece to test it, but if they’re bitter don’t eat a meal of them.

  5. These look like regular acorn and sweet dumpling (also an acorn type). They’re not novelty squash, they’re just particularly attractive (and delicious).

All 3 are good to eat. You can bake the two squashes in the oven, then cut in half and add a little butter and salt and pepper, it’s delicious that way. 😋

I know the acorn squash is wonderful when roasted! My mom always cooked them cut side up with the center well full of butter and brown sugar. The taste of fall!

I love acorn squash. Just slice it in half, remove the seeds, rub a little olive oil on the meat side, salt it and pepper it and I ad a little Italian spices, and lay face down on a cookie pan and bake for about twenty minutes at 350…the sugars caramelize and oh my is this good. I am vegetarian so I fill the hole with black beans but my kids like sausage in the hole of their squash.

I just used an acorn squash in some butter chicken I made last night. My process (definitely not the proper way to make butter chicken but I was winging it with adding the squash purée):

I normally use two containers/packs of butter chicken sauce for about 1.5 lbs of chicken, for this one I only used one. This time I cut the acorn squash in half, scooped out the seeds and stringy bits, rubbed oil and salt on the flesh, placed cut side down on parchment lined baking sheet and baked at 400F for 40 minutes. After that I pulled the rind off and put the flesh in a pot with tomato paste, a splash of milk, and some extra butter chicken sauce style seasonings. Once it was all heated and incorporated (you can also use an immersion blender at this point to smooth it out but the squash should be soft enough after baking that it’ll be fine if you dont) I added the one container of butter chicken sauce, mixed it all up and then added the chicken I cooked to it. Then just let it simmer for about 10 minutes. The taste might be slightly different than normal butter chicken but the squash flavor is so mild that you would have to do a side by side tasting to notice. I’ve been trying to incorporate more in season produce into my diet because I hate vegetables and this worked really well for me.

That acorn squash (next to the banana) will be very tasty and if you like it you can get the seeds anywhere. Squash cross-pollinate so easily that this fruit’s parent plant could have been pollinated by any cucurbit on the farm. Its seeds will probably not grow the same type, but it’s a popular variety and it’ll be easy to find seeds elsewhere.

Acorn squash are one of my favorite. I’ll make them savory or sweet and they delicious either way.

Yum! I grow both. I’ve not seen them listed as “novelty” they are a part of my winter squash stores in the garage.

  13. Those are just regular eating squash. The top one is a sweet dumpling and the bottom is an acorn squash. I buy them regularly for eating all the time. Very nice roasted with some maple syrup or roasted and made into soup.

  14. I just really have to ask this but those are novelty squash where you live?

acorn squash in particular I’ve seen them in every single grocery store all around the country most of the year

Both are delicious, but I am partial to acorn squash which can be roasted like butternut.

Acorn squash is awesome! My mom’s go-to recipe for Acorn squash that she grows is to split them, deseed, oil, salt, pepper, and fill the center with meatloaf and bake. So good!

The green one, already mentioned, is acorn squash and it is sooooo good. Roast it and add just a little butter… ugh.
