Food inflation expected to hit 3.5% by Christmas

Butchers are warning that turkey prices could rise by up to 6 per cent this Christmas, as inflation continues to drive up the cost of feed, energy, and labour.

Last year, turkeys started from around 13 euro at one supermarket chain, but prices at a number of retailers like Tesco and SuperValu are already higher this season – with a 9-kilo bird selling for 49 euro.

Strong demand for boneless options, which are easier to cook, are expected.

Meanwhile, food inflation is expected to reach around 3 to 3 point 5 per cent by Christmas.

Retail experts are advising shoppers to plan early and spread out their festive spending.
