The popular Mediterranean restaurant Jersey Kebab is set to move a mile down Haddon Avenue to a space occupied for years by another go-to restaurant.
Jersey Kebab — which garnered attention when its owners were confronted with major immigration problems earlier this year — is relocating from Westmont in Haddon Township to a bigger space in Collingswood.
The shop owners, who are from Turkey, posted on social media that Oct. 26 will be their last day at the Westmont location at 150 Haddon Ave. They’re then soon to open at 729 Haddon Ave., a town over.
This new location had been The Pop Shop for years, but was rebranded as The Stardust Café in July and is now to close.
Jersey Kebab customers react to move
Jersey Kebab owners placed the news on their Facebook page, which featured a photo of their handwritten note that they’d placed in the restaurant’s window in Haddon Township.
“Good for you guys!” Danielle Marie Barton wrote on the Jersey Kebab Facebook post. “More seats, better parking, it’s a win! We’ll miss you being up the street, but still super close! Congrats!”
“So excited for you guys!” wrote Jacqui Cohen. “Does this mean an expanded menu? Are you taking over that whole space?”
Judy Kottke said she looks forward to visiting the restaurant in its new location.
Willemijn Don-Goetz wrote: “Excited for you but we’ll miss you being at the end of the street!”
Community rallied behind Jersey Kebab after ICE arrests
Jersey Kebab opened in Haddon Township about four years ago.
The family-owned restaurant was at the center of a huge immigration crisis approximately seven months ago regarding the owners’ immigration status. This has still not yet been resolved.
Muhammed Emanet told NJ Pen that his mother, Emine Emanet, who co-owns Jersey Kebab with husband Celal Emanet, was due to appear before an immigration judge the week of Oct. 23.
In February, Emine and Celal were arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at their business.
Members of the Haddon Township community rallied around them, donating more than $327,000 for legal fees and lost income and writing letters of support for Emine’s release. Celal was allowed to remain home after being fitted with an ankle monitor.
After spending two weeks in ICE detention, Emine returned home following a bond hearing where an immigration judge granted her release on $7,500.
