ANN ARBOR, MI — As a born-and-raised New Yorker, I’ve had countless different examples of Mediterranean food.

I have a passion for Mediterranean cuisine. I took a cooking class in Greece and had my 21st birthday celebration at a Mediterranean restaurant in midtown Manhattan.

I’ve only lived in Ann Arbor for two months now, covering the University of Michigan and higher education. Spiedo brought me back to my hometown with its various offerings from dips to flatbread wraps.

This small, cozy restaurant is colorful inside and out with flavors that are out of this world.

Tirshi with flatbread at Spiedo in Ann ArborTirshi, a North African acorn squash dip, with flatbead from Spiedo, 307 S. 5th Ave., in Ann Arbor.William Diep

I first dug into the Tirshi, a North African dip with an acorn squash base. The bowl was decorated with pomegranate seeds, walnut, cacao nibs and sesame seeds, creating a great blend of tastes and textures.

The flatbread is a veritable conveyer belt to shovel the dip into your mouth. It’s a perfect autumn bite that will make you come back for more.

I also tried the popular Zhoug Knight, a flatbread wrap stuffed with marinated chicken, half sours, pickled onions, shredded cabbage and the restaurant’s signature Spiedo sauce.

The wrap was to die for. It was a mix of savory, spicy, citric and sweet all-in-one-carb symphony. Dare I say, one of the best dishes I’ve tried here in Ann Arbor.

The restaurant’s vegan chocolate tahini shake is also worth noting. The almond flavor comes through so nicely and complements the thick and chocolate drink perfectly.

Spiedo opened in September 2023 and has served countless customers since. During my visit, I saw co-workers chatting about academic prospects, friends catching up and a solo diner reading a comfort book.

Whether you need an easy autumn-inspired lunch or casual dinner spot with a loved one, Spiedo can do it for you.
