On my last day in Greece, I try one of the best restaurants in Athens that I ate at. This was not a famous or touristy spot at all, it was just a local Greek souvlaki place, or Greek skewers if you’re not familiar. It was a place frequented entirely by locals, specifically old men smoking cigarettes. At this place, I had authentic souvlaki in Greece and it was one of the best BBQ restaurants I’ve ever had!

The most traditional Greek Souvlaki is pork souvlaki, so I of course ordered one of those. We also got chicken souvlaki and sheep souvlaki, which may have been closer to lamb souvlaki is sheep I would imagine is less tender. It was all very good, and definitely among the best restaurants in Greece that I had been to during my trip. And also authentic Greek salad? Officially one of my favorite things to eat now. Authentic Greek feta is one of the most delicious, creamy, and tangy things I’ve ever eaten!

Hey guys and welcome to another episode of UAE Eats. I’m UA and uh it is uh me and Tina’s last day in Greece. We’re here in Athens and uh we came here to Greece for a friend’s wedding and uh yeah, we we had a great time. We’re now exhausted and it’s our last day. So before we go uh we want to have like a really authentic meal uh here in Greece, like authentic Greek food that you know back home like the Greek food there just would not compare to this. And uh you know what I really wanted was savaki like Greek skewers. And yeah, I ate at this place when I first landed in Greece and I liked it so much I had to come back. So, I figured I would show you guys this time. So, while we were exploring like the more bustling uh you know, exciting part of Athens, now we’re in like a more residential part of Athens. Uh and uh yeah, I really really enjoyed this place. Uh this place uh seems to be a real neighborhood spot. Like when I ate here last time, it was mostly uh elderly Greek locals smoking cigarettes outside while eating savlaki. I can’t wait. No paper menus, though. So, we’ll just have to scan the QR code. And what I hope is a good sign. Uh, you scan the QR code and um it’s it’s in Greek originally, but you can change it to English, but the default is not English. The default is Greek. So, yeah. So, yeah, appetizers, uh, salads. I’ll just show you guys what they got. They got sausage for €650. Uh, I’m actually not sure what graviera is, but they also have feta cheese, all sorts of things. and the and potatoes here in Athens. So good. They have really nice fries. Like their fries are almost like British style chips. Like the way that they hand cut them and like pre- boil them. Getting them real, you know, real soft, pillowy on the inside and, you know, a little bit crisp on the outside. Not quite as crispy as American fries, but uh but I still dig them. You get pies, too. I’m guessing that’s like uh what is it? Spinach pies. Spanotopia. Am I saying that right? Oh, sure. I don’t know why it’s not focusing right. And they even have wings and whatnot. But when in Greece, uh we got to do Greek salad. Like we you just got to 750 for Greek salad. And uh you know, I used to think I didn’t like Greek salad back home, but when I had Greek salad in Greece, I realized that it is just not it is just so much better quality, so much better in Greece. So, we’re definitely going to get a Greek salad. They got other salads, too, but my mind is made up. Yeah, that’s actually pretty much it. Just the eggplant salad. So, we’re definitely doing a Greek salad for sure. And then straws are their u sulaki. They call them straws, not sulaki. Maybe that’s what sulaki actually means. Pork is the classic. So we’re going to do a pork, we’re going to do a chicken, and we’re going to do a sheep. So we’ll just do that. A Greek salad. And uh yeah, maybe some fries. And that’ll be pretty much it. So yeah, easy peasy lemon squeezy. You know, nothing uh nothing too fancy. Just a no frills uh you know, Greek street food meal before we have to head out. So let’s order. Yeah, I’ll do we’ll do uh one uh one pork saki. Yes. Uh one you want you want a chicken? Yeah. So, two chicken. Two chicken and uh sheep. And two sheep. Yeah. And two sheep. Okay. And we’ll also do a Greek salad. Yes. And and one egg. You want small pa bread? Uh yes. Okay. And uh to drink sparkling water. Yes. Yes. I’ll just get normal water. One big or one small. Okay. Anything else? And an order of fries. Thank you. Thank you. Can’t wait. Perfect final meal in Greece. Oh, look. So many stray cats here in Athens. Yeah, man. One thing that I like about Europe in general, at least Greece and Italy, is the uh prevalence of sparkling water as an option. you do got to pay for it, but I like that it costs the same as regular water. And I also like that the caps you’re gonna, you know, they they’re designed not to go anywhere. They just kind of perch up here. So, that’s kind of neat. So, look at this kitty. Kitty, you want some uh you want some sulaki? You want some fruit salad? Thank you. Thank you. Oh, nice. So, awesome. All right, guys. We got Let me show you the Greek salad. And Tina actually also ordered a eggplant salad. So, maybe we’ll show you some of that as well. And all right, Tina, feel free to dig into the um the eggplant salad, but uh let me show you guys the Greek salad here. So, look at this big slab of feta on top. You know, the other ingredients might be familiar, like um a tomato, uh cucumber, and um and raw onion, olives, and stuff, but really what makes an authentic Greek salad is a big slab, an unbroken slab of feta on top. And that’s that that’s the real deal. That’s how you know that you’re getting real feta. Like back in the US, like you get a lot of fake feta, like that pre-crumbled stuff from a bag, but like here in Greece, it’s like real feta. And when it’s a big block, then that’s how you especially know that’s coming from a real real slab of feta. So, I can’t wait. I’m just going to dive into this guy. Yeah. Look at this. Get a little bit everything on one bite. [Music] Oh man. Let me just eat a piece of this feta straight up. M. Oh, coming to Greece, Greek salads have been ruined for me and feta feta has been ruined for me back home in general cuz there’s just no comparison. Spock might say it is only logical for the federation. Okay. Anyways, like I said, you don’t want that pre-rumbled stuff. I mean, that’s all they have back home in America/Canada. You want a big slab like this where you got to break it off yourself, mix it with the ingredients. Nothing too special too in this Greek salad. No like chopped like lettuce or anything, you know, just tomato, just cucumber and feta cheese and onion. Oh my goodness. That’s that’s how you know you got something great. And you know, usually I don’t actually usually like raw tomatoes, but I like them in grease for some reason because they’re just juicier. They’re sweeter. They’re just better. It tastes fresher. Wow. The feta here is just like more mild and it’s more creamy. The olive oil on top is a great touch and it’s just really, really good, guys. I mean, if you ever come to Greece, like I said, it’s going to change your whole perspective on feta cheese and Greek food back home in general. Oh, I was so glad I could eat this before I before I have to leave tomorrow. But let’s try an olive. They are famous for olives after all. Right. [Music] Fries. Oh, yes. Thank you. Thank you. You’re welcome. The olives are definitely better than back home. Like um I think um back home there’s like a really strong aftertaste to olives that like you know I don’t really like. These are definitely you know richer in flavor. But that being said yeah it’s okay. You know I just don’t really like olives that much. So it’s okay olive. It’s not you it’s me. Yeah I know Athena gave you guys olives apparently but yeah sorry Athena. It’s just not for me. So actually they just brought some fries too. And look at what that meant. like they’re fluffy like hand cut you know different preparation technique than in America right [Music] take a look yeah like I said they do kind of resemble British chips more right than like American fries so yeah you know nice and fluffy in the center thicker cut you know not too crispy on the outside so that’s the main gripe I have I wish I wish they could be crispier but they’re nice like they really taste It’s like potato wedges more so than fries. So, and I like potato wedges. Can I try the eggplant salad? All right, then. Let me try the pita bread just on its own. All right. [Music] Super pillowy, super soft, not very crispy. Interesting. And it kind of has like a I don’t know. Almost kind of tastes like corn. Yeah. Like it kind of has like a corn flavor, which I don’t know if it is. Maybe that’s just how it tastes. coincidentally. But now let’s try uh dip. What do I do? I dip it or maybe I’ll I’ll Yeah, you can scoop some on for me. Thank you. Yeah, thank you, Tina. All right, let’s try this eggplant salad. M. Oh, I like that a lot. That’s really good. M. It’s cold. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be cold or hot, but I like it. It’s cold. And it’s a eggplant, you know, obviously, but it’s not too oily. It’s not too greasy a little bit, but like if anything, it tastes more acidic, like more vinegary. And, you know, it’s got like some um tomatoes mixed in and stuff. So, it’s really, really good. All right. I think our food’s here. Yes. Thank you. Uh let’s uh I guess can you put it there or Yeah. Okay. One bowl, two chicken. Thank you. Thank you. All right. Perfect timing. The food is coming really fast. And uh this is one thing that I like about Greece compared to Italy is that in Italy you sometimes have to wait like an hour just for your food, you know? Uh sometimes like 30 minutes at least just to get the server’s attention. But here it’s pretty pretty quick. So yeah, we got uh we got one pork cuz Tina cannot eat pork. Tina does not eat pork. So we got a pork sulaki here, a pork straw, sheep or lamb. I think they really need more lamb than sheep. I don’t really think this is mutton. I think it’s probably really really lamb even though they said sheep. But, you know, I I really don’t think it’s mutton cuz I think that would probably be too tough and and gainy. And then we got a chicken one as well. And look at how charred and amazing that looks. So, pork sulaki. Let’s do this one first, the traditional one. All right. M. [Music] Oh, that’s pretty good. Sorry, Tina. I wish I wish you could eat pork cuz the pork one, you know, I I came here like when I first came to Greece before you met me and the pork one is definitely the best one. I think but I hope you enjoy that cheap one though. The pork one is the original one, right? I think pork most popular. I think pork is like the most traditional I think. Yeah, I see. Let me show you guys. Um just look at that char. Look at how look at the amazing color they got on this guy. They not only infused flavor by grilling it, but they also added a nice char, you know, like a little bit of almost like a bit of a crust on this guy. So incredible. And also just look at how incredibly like juicy and fatty this is. And and it’s not dried out at all. It’s like really really juicy and fatty. And it’s like really really juicy and fatty and incredible. Wow. And well seasoned, too. So let’s uh add a little bit of lemon juice. See if that cuts back on the fat a tiny bit. [Music] And the lemon helps. The lemon helps to kind of dial back the fat a little bit, but I almost don’t mind it without the lemon. Like, it makes it more more fatty in an indulgent way. Now, let’s try one of the sheep ones. And just look at that amazing char they got on this guy. Oh man, Greek people are like the masters of grilling meat. Nope. Almost. Okay. [Music] Okay. So, it’s a little chewy. I will say it’s not quite that tender, but the flavor is good. So, yeah. Unfortunately, it it is rather tough. So, so unfortunately, it’s a little tough. It’s a bit of a jaw workout, but the seasoning’s great. It’s seasoned well. The flavor of the lamb or the sheep or uh or whatever they’re using is quite nice and the char is amazing. So yeah, if only the tender if only the texture were a little bit more tender, but very very good. And then lastly, probably the most versatile one, chicken. So a little bit of lemon juice on this. Oh. M. Actually, the chicken one is also quite juicy and moist and and and pretty fatty, too. Like they probably are marinating it maybe. I don’t know if they based it or something. And the chicken one’s also like it kind of like you can taste like the charcoal flavor the most cuz it’s the most neutral flavor. But well, let’s try taking one of these breads and make ourselves like a little sandwich. Actually, I think the bread would work best for the pork. Maybe help absorb some of the fattiness. So, all right. [Music] M actually that masked some of the fattiness and the flavor of the pork the bread did. But still good. But anyways guys before we left Greece I just wanted to show you guys um you know the one of the best places I ate at while here. I mean we ate at a few places and the place that I ate at when I first landed in Athens is my favorite still which is this Slaki place. And like I said, you know, it seemed to be all locals eating here, like um a bunch of like Greek old men smoking cigarettes outside and you know, gossiping and chatting. And you know, I had a good feeling about this place. The menu being primarily in Greek at first too until you, you know, swipe it to English. So guys, fantastic. I mean, if you love grilled meats, if grilled meats are your thing, uh Greek food is up your alley. And in Greece, like I don’t think anyone does grilled meat grilled meats like skewers and euros and whatnot than than the Greeks. Real Greek salad as well. The pita bread was interesting and I enjoyed and I enjoyed the fries. They’re kind of like British chip-like. But anyways guys, that’s going to be it for this video. So, I’m just going to enjoy this and uh that’ll be it for this video. So, do you guys like Greek food? What are your favorite Greek dishes? 1. That concludes my series of vids in Italy and Greece. Hope you enjoyed them! A few vids from China coming before back to the US

  2. Yummy best ever .marinated meats on a grill you can not beat with fresh salads .
So good in hot weather .being Australian love it. Especially using lamb.

  3. Straws? ..😂.. the fight goes on .. South Greece calls souvlaki like the one you bought kalamaki ( straw) but north Greece when you go to by call them souvlaki .. we souths call souvlaki the one with pita bread .. so if go north and ask for "straw " souvlaki .. they know 2 things you are from south and they give you straws for coffee! 😂😂

  4. UA, you are welcome to come just north of Greece in North Macedonia, then roll up to Serbia to try the worlds best barbecue, especially in Serbia, if you ever feel like having a great food tour, you are welcome here always, and you have a follower who will gladly show you around 😊

  5. The name of the place is actually funny because it's like how a Greek would imagine it should be called in French. It sells kalamakia (καλαμάκια), the meat on a stick, so it should be called Kalamakeri (Καλαμακερί) 😂. Also the owner must be from Crete since it has these small pies on the menu that are from there and mizithra from Rethymno, a local soft cheese from Crete

  6. The greens are off the charts in Greece and Mediterranean in general, up north where I live tomatoes and cucumber are more "watery", not bad, but watching this video made my crave for real authentic Greek Salad.. it's been a long since was in Greece last time.. food in that part of the world is great! <3

  7. Hey UA, since you’re from around here, please do a review of Taverna Kyklades in Astoria (on Ditmars blvd). If you’ve already done it, please forgive my ignorance; haven’t watched all of your videos although I’ve watched quite a few. Just skip the pork shish kebab since it seemed dry and “meh” to me (nothing to write home about). The rest of it was amazing, at least when we went.

  8. Love your videos. I think tomatoes are probably one of the most vulnerable product as far as agri- business is concerned. That’s why there’s such a huge variation in flavour between tomatoes particularly. If you can find tomatoes that are grown locally and in season they probably won’t even taste like any tomato you bought at the supermarket.

  9. Love the videos but it’s crazy to me that you say you can’t find authentic Greek food In ny. Go to Astoria bro

  10. The best thing you can get in greece as far as grilled meat goes is grilled lamp chops. You need to find a place that does them well but good lamp chops are peak. Grilled octopus is also great in greece

  11. Most decent size cities in the US have ethnic grocery stores. My city is 150k in the Midwest and I can get Greek, French, Bulgarian and domestic at the deli case. Also in the refrigerated section, more commercial but still imported. It's easy to get this stuff now….when I was a kid in the 70s we had to drive 4 hrs to Chicago just to get olives!
