The Salvation Army of Livingston and Grundy Counties continues to offer food assistance through two pantry locations, providing support for residents in need across both counties.

One pantry operates at the Salvation Army office located at 621 West Mohawk Road in Chillicothe. A second pantry is hosted at the Grundy County Health Department in Trenton every other Thursday. The next Trenton event is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on November 6.

During a recent appearance on the KTTN Open Line program, Salvation Army Director Lynda Snuffer encouraged those planning to attend the Trenton pantry to call ahead. Snuffer noted that advance calls help staff determine the number of food items necessary. Participants will be required to complete an intake form over the phone.

Snuffer anticipates a rise in demand for food pantry services due to the ongoing federal government shutdown and the delayed issuance of November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

The Salvation Army is currently accepting food donations to support both pantries.

In addition to food, monetary donations are also welcome to help purchase items that may be lacking in the pantry inventory.

Those interested in attending the Trenton food pantry on November 6 should call the Salvation Army office at 660-646-3538.

The organization is also accepting Christmas applications for Livingston and Grundy County residents.

Snuffer said applications may be completed over the phone without the need to visit the Chillicothe office.

The Salvation Army plans to provide gifts for children 15 years and younger, noting that applicants 16 and older are considered adults for Christmas services. The organization aims to fulfill at least one need and one wish for each child, with items placed on Angel Trees for selection by donors.

Families without children under 16 may still apply. Those applicants will receive food baskets instead of gifts.

Snuffer reported that efforts are underway to provide food for both Christmas meals and additional December needs. While meat and corn have already been secured, donations are still needed for green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, and similar holiday meal items.

Snuffer emphasized that the Christmas application process is not income-based, adding that applicants typically demonstrate genuine need.

Christmas applications will be accepted through November 7. Distribution will take place in Trenton on December 12 and in Chillicothe on December 15 and 16. Interested applicants may call 660-646-3538.

The Salvation Army will begin its annual red kettle fundraising campaign on November 7.

Snuffer said bell ringers will be stationed at Hy-Vee in Trenton and at both Hy-Vee and Walmart in Chillicothe. While Hy-Vee allows ringers to stay indoors, Walmart requires outdoor placement due to national contracts, though huts are provided for shelter.

Bell ringers may sit if needed and are encouraged to dress up or play music. Individuals and organizations may volunteer, either by choosing a regular day or by being available on call. Snuffer noted that 87 cents of every dollar raised stays in the community, with this year’s goal set at $48,000. The red kettle campaign is the foundation of the organization’s annual budget.
