I definitely feel like they ordered this. Chicken needs some work though. It’s a little dry. This is nasty. [Music] Hi, my name is Aa O. Hey, my name is Jojo. Hi, my name is Denzel. And today we’re trying each other’s chicken and waffles. I’m from Los Angeles, born and raised. My parents are Jamaican. Born and raised in Englewood. I am from Compton, California, born and raised in the land, of course. My mom is from Memphis and my dad is from Louisiana. Chicken and waffles means to me a good old time. When I think about LA, I immediately think about chicken and waffles. You think about the classics. There’s just something about that sweet, savory vibe that just like perfectly encompasses what LA is all about. Did I grow up on chicken and waffles? I would say yes and no. I grew up on fried chicken. Waffles, not so much. Chicken and waffles feels like it’s an LA original. The nice waffle with the crispy edges and the pockets. Three wings if you will please or breast. I’ll take a breast. Syrup got to be warm. Some hot sauce. Sweet and savory. Man, you can’t go wrong. To know LA is to be from LA. So if you’re not from here, you wouldn’t understand. A block really does make a difference. I’ll call them the transplants. Love to talk down on LA. And it’s usually not the people from LA that always have something to say about LA. But we be chilling. LA natives are like the most kind-hearted, sweet, down to earth people versus like this kind of like industry allure that, you know, people get drawn into a lot. Especially being like a black woman in LA, I love it. Just the culture we have, our sense of style, the slang that we use, just everything. LA weather, scenery, and good food. You know what I’m saying? All right, I’m ready to try these chicken and waffles. Let’s do it. [Music] Today I brought my chicken and waffles and I like to call this dish California love. My Jamaican roots definitely add a different flavor to the way that I cook. So it’s a red velvet waffle with spicy jerk chicken wings and it’s the best of both worlds. So it encompasses my Jamaican heritage with my love of red velvet and waffles. I never really see people do jerk chicken wings with waffles, but this is a huge staple in my household. The jerk marinade I can’t even talk about. It’s been in my family for over 60 years. We love red velvet in South Central. The red velvet to make it like really rich and silky, I have to add fresh cocoa powder. And just so y’all know, red velvet is chocolate. I would love if my dish won cuz I feel like it encompasses LA. It’s sweet. It’s spicy. It’s the perfect combo of LA love. I like what they did with the heart waffle. This is so cute. Oh my god, they did a heart shape. It looks like a red velvet. I smell jerk. This jerk chicken. I love that. So, whoever made this must be from the island. I figured I’d see a red velvet waffle here today at some point just cuz, you know, it’s like it’s like a trendy thing right now happening. If you mess up red velvet, you just need to get out of the kitchen. I’m not going to lie. Let’s get into this puafil. It’s like a cake. I don’t know how, but it’s kind of flavorless. I’m not even going to lie to you. I’m not even trying to be mean, but like this is moist. It don’t taste like red velvet, though. It’s giving cake. It tastes like a regular waffle. That’s red, which is that might have been what they was going for. That’s why the powdered sugar is on here, cuz ain’t no flavor in a waffle. That jerk kind of hot. A little kick. Okay. I like the chicken. Feel like a dragon low key. I’m going to need a plate of this to go. This right here presentation. Appreciate it. I like the chicken more than I like the waffle. Now, I’ve never had jerk chicken and waffles before. This is a first. I wouldn’t put these two together. It’s too spicy and too sweet. Do I think this person’s from LA? I’m going have to say yeah. The plate is not giving LA. I really don’t know what this is. It gives like island and then it gives like down south. Caribbean food. It’s a lot of Caribbeans out here. That with the red velvet. I feel like we be red velvet in everything. I would give this a seven. The chicken was hidden. They did they big one with that one. I did love the heart shape though. That was so cute. I love that. One thing I think they could have done better was season their batter a little more. And I’m going to rate this a 7.5. Very creative. By the way, today I brought my buttermilk waffle and my deep fried chicken. I did do chicken breast today just because I had to share, of course. Had to make sure it was enough to go around. Let me let y’all in on a secret, though. Whenever you frying chicken, and if you decide to do it at home, add some butter to your oil. Crispy. How it sound on a commercial is how it’s about to sound in your kitchen. Trust me. My secret weapon would have to be my maple syrup because I add vanilla in it. You know, just to add a little extra flavor. I think my chicken and waffles is going to win today just because y’all see how this chicken look though, right? I feel like I won already. [Music] Ooh, somebody definitely went the easy route and just ordered. I’m super excited to try. But they look really good and they smell good, too. Let’s dig into these waffles. Man, chicken good. It’s a little dry, but it’s good. I’m a white meat man myself. I love the breast. Succulent and juicy. The waffles were good. Very cinnamon flavored. It’s nostalgic. I was out at my chicken waffle spot every weekend. Walk in. They knew me. They said, “We know what you want.” Something they could have done better was pick a different cut of meat. Maybe give me the wing. Something they did well was pull up and order this. Stop. The waffle is giving me a lot of cinnamon, nutmeg. You know what I’m saying? A nice whole wheat allpurpose flour. I would give this a eight. This tastes like a very LA chicken and waffle. Like very traditional. On a scale of 1 through 10, I’m going have to give this a eight. Good fried chicken, fluffy, flavorful waffle. It hit all the corners, man. I learned to cook at my great grandma’s house. Just really just being in the kitchen with the family and I just kind of fell in love with it. So, today I brought my version of chicken and waffles. So, we got a cinnamon roll waffle, double battered fried chicken. The chicken was brined in buttermilk and pickle juice for 12 hours with a maple bourbon vanilla glaze on top. This is a first. I made glaze before, but it was made with a little extra love and a little bit, you know what I’m saying? You got to have a hot sauce. Red rooster on the side is delicious. Will I win this? Only time will tell, but I’m confident. I put everything I could into it. Everything. It’s a whole leg in here. It smells good. It looks so good. I love hot sauce. This might be a crystal. No, Red Rooster. I know my hot sauce. So, I am seeing a what looks like a fried chicken wing. The waffle looks good. The chicken though, it’s a little dusty, but all right. It looks really good, and I’m excited to try it. Okay, the waffle is good. Mhm. Definitely a cinnamon roll waffle. So, whoever made this waffle, like they make waffles. The chicken’s really good. Nice and moist. Whatever they use to like coat this or bread this with, I wouldn’t do it again. Your skin should not be falling off this easily. I love the hot sauce, of course. Red rooster always hit. I love the wing more than the waffle. This one, I like the waffle more than I like the chicken. I also really like syrup, so I could have used a little bit of syrup, but I think it was fine. I think it could stand alone, but it did need a little syrup. It’s not really giving the west side, but it is a side of Los Angeles and I do like it. Honestly, I would say they probably are from LA. No shade to nobody, but I run into a lot of people that’s from LA that don’t know how to fry chicken. I think you from LA. I would rate this dish in eight. Only deducting two points because I think I wanted some syrup. I’m giving it a eight cuz that waffle was amazing. Chicken needs some work though. [Music] Hi, I’m Tisha Campbell. And I’m Wendy Briquel Robinson. And today we are unbiased judges. I was always fascinated about chicken and waffles. Growing up in LA, I mean, it was synonymous with LA. There was chicken and there was waffles and they all went together. Yes. It’s that sweet, savory, but you get a little piece of everything and that’s how LA is. Come on. Is that It’s that comfort food. Yeah. Okay, let’s try these dishes, girl. Hearts. Oh, this is pretty for Valentine’s Day. Puts jerk chicken with a red velvet waffle. This don’t sound right. Sugar. Somebody got to go to the bathroom for a long time. Okay. Okay. I’m not going to judge it until I eat it. Red velvet with jerk chicken. Huh? Is this first? Is it? Is it? It’s got a nice kick to it, too. Yeah. It’s got you dancing in your seat. Hold on. Let me taste. Oh, see. It’s very spicy. It is. And I like spicy. Oh, you used the fork. I’m fancy, huh? Look at you. Oh, it is spicy. I can’t. But you know what? It’s spicy to a point where it’s still spicy in the aftertaste. Like, I don’t want to feel or taste my food after I eat it. I ain’t feeling this cookie waffle. It tastes like cake. And I want my waffle to be a waffle. But the jerk chicken, now that’s hot. Butter six. Not together. That’s terrible. Now that’s a zero. That’s terrible. Don’t put junk chicken with no damn waffle cake. Well, and just be careful the spices. In other words, yes, you can do whatever you choose to do, but you want to make sure that it doesn’t overspice or overtake the cake. This is looking Oh, is this a whole bowl of hot sauce? I want a hot wing with my waffle now. Y’all messing up. So, then we have an icing on top of our waffle. Yeah, which is a lot. Let’s see what it do. I like my waffles with syrup. It’s giving cinnabon. Oh, this is not good. Yeah, it’s doing too much. Who eats hot wings with a cinnab bun? I just want to say that it’s different. She’s so demure. Yes. Very. This is nasty. Y’all trying to poison us? I don’t like it. Oh, and what she means is so You want us to rape this? She’s Simon Cow. I’ll be Paula Abdul. Yes, Paula. How do you How do you rate it? I’ll give it a one for And I’ll be Simon. This should be buried in the backyard. M. Oo Lord. I like the golden chicken. The waffles are brown. Okay. Now that’s good. That’s a nice little hint of cinnamon. It’s a nice crunch. Yeah, it’s not bad. Yeah, it’s good. It’s good. I would just put a little hot sauce on it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. At least a 10. I’ll give it an eight. Yeah. This is chicken and waffle. Good. It’s crispy, so that’s cool. We took at least three bites. Mhm. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Oh, so I won. Okay. I mean, not like that, but I already knew. No, I’m glad everyone liked it though. I’m glad everyone, you know, was feeling it. Shout out to the land. Shout out to the city. Big CPT. This was a wonderful, wonderful experience. We’re all representing a different part of LA and that’s okay. I was happy to lose to those two waffles, so they were good. Can’t win all of them. You know what I’m saying? But I gave it all I could.
