First published in 54, this is from the 17th edition in late 58 (yes they really made 17 editions in 4 years)

Really cool book for basic recipees and kitchen stuff. It has a lot of info on how to handle and store various ingredients, how to identify herbs, spices and mushrooms, time management and plating.

Some of the stuff fell out of time (and everything has sooooo much butter) but there are some great basic recipees in there. Will definitly try some in the future.

So was having a full on dead cooked fish as a centerpiece a sign of wealth? Or the trappings of elegance??

Cause it seems like a focal point in a weird number of these.

My mom had a bunch of old recipe books like that when we were kids and we used to laugh at how terrible everything looks. The joke usually was “Imagine having to eat this every day. Now we understand why Grandpa is angry all the time”

I think it’s hilarious that they tried to make the sauerkraut and potatoes look like an ice cream sundae. It reminds me of when I was in Germany and had an ice cream sundae that they tried to make look like spaghetti and meatballs.
